Apparently this is not everyones cup of tea, that's OK. It might be that the black pimps are portrayed if not sympathetically but as complex intelligent humans. I understand why white folks would have a problem with that. One of the cruder ones does get his righteous comeuppance in episode 7. which is satisfying.

To me it is better than Wire/Sopranos in that you don't have to go online as much to keep track of the characters. The acting is first rate and the sex scenes/nudity are groundbreaking even for HBO. The gratuitous smoking is annoying but abates somewhat in the later episodes.

The show is more about developing the characters than action/violence. Feel free to watch a stupid bullet dodging movie if that is your thing. And yes Treme was lame.

RU4REALBRO? Some people don't like a show you like and you attribute that to that they're so racist they can't enjoy black characters portrayed complexly, and thus can likely only enjoy action movies?

The smoking complaint is pretty fkn random too, it's obviously a choice for authenticity.

Fwiw I thought this show was fantastic

I watched season 1 a few months ago and am sort of looking forward to tonight's season 2 premiere.

It's not great. But, it's good enough to keep me tuned in.

I don't know why anybody would think the black pimps were portrayed as "complex intelligent humans". They seemed like pure stereotypes to me.

I was surprised the show jumped from 1971/72 to 1977.

If the show runs several more seasons, is the intent to go forward to the early '90s when Times Square becomes "Disneyfied"?

Pretty sure they have already said that season 3 will be about the 80's when porn moved from theaters to VHS tapes.

I don't like or dislike James Franco but the idea to cast him in this dual role takes away from the show. The best episodes have been the ones where he gets the least amount of screen time.

I don't really mind Vinnie (he is kinda the glue that connects all the storylines) but Frank doesn't really have any function.

cc is such a pos but hes also so pathetic that you almost feel sorry for the guy.

anyway, that was such a great episode. finally. the scene with eileeen was really great. I really did not think she would do it but it obv makes total sense to do it. and given they had spent the entire show building her up as a character that does what she wants and doesnt bow to men (no pimp, refusing anal from that dude and proly other times) so this was really the first time that she did something she didnt really want to do and cowed to the power of a man.
