Season's over and it's still suffering from an acute lack of plot. I mean, I'm happy to keep spending time in this world as a fly on the wall, but some sort of actual story would really class up the joint.

I will continue to watch but it did not live up to the hype of the reviews.

didn't seem like all that much happened. thought there would be something big with the cops and mob guys or the parlors/bar would run into trouble or literally any tension would occur

but basically over eight episodes all we have is "the police forced hookers into massage parlors and take a cut"

Yeah, I thought it was a good show, but it just didn't go far for the amount of episodes. I like the world, but in terms of storytelling the plot did not progress much at all. I felt like in The Wire, you would have to pay attention to every scene of every episode because everything mattered. A minor character or statement would have significance 4-5 episodes (or seasons) later. Scenes would build the world while furthering the plot. In The Deuce, the world was built over 8 episodes, but it wouldn't have mattered had I missed any scene or even most episodes.

The show was inspirational for social mobility by showing that Candy could work her way up from street hooker to call girl to porn actress to porn director. This could be shown to poor kids to show them that they too can succeed.

Also we see moral fortitude because Vince owns a bar fronted by the mob who pays of law enforcement draws the ethical line by refusing to own a massage parlor.

I'm joking of course. IMO the show was really well done in terms of authenticity, costumes, sets, dialogue, acting. I'm old enough to know what it was like in 1971 and I didn't see a lot of mistakes. After seeing the rock scene "96 tears" , I probably would have put in some more musical performances in the show. The show seemed to lack drama maybe by trying too hard not to be melodramatic.

I think it's an interesting show, you're just there following around a bunch of degenerates in 1970s Manhattan. The plot talk makes me think you guys spent too much time in English class.

and if you don't care about following around a bunch of degenerates in 1970s Manhattan, it's an extremely uninteresting show

They overdue the cigarette porn. Is it really that hard to act without a cigarette as a prop.

The ongoing existential crisis stuff with the pimps is boring.

Show is too slow, it needs more killing.

I really liked the show, maybe it could have moved bit faster early on, but it didn't really have any filler that was completely unrelated to the show. 9/10

Really liked the show, but this garbage HBO keeps pulling is really pissing me off. Charge me a dollar more a month or whatever, and give me a full season.

Seems pretty silly that the show hasn´t given any reasoning as to why she would have ended up as a street hooker in the first place.

I was disappointed in the first ep or two and then disappointed the season ended so abruptly. I can see why some people didn't like it much, but I finished it pretty optimistic about what Simon can do in a second season.

Apparently this is not everyones cup of tea, that's OK. It might be that the black pimps are portrayed if not sympathetically but as complex intelligent humans. I understand why white folks would have a problem with that. One of the cruder ones does get his righteous comeuppance in episode 7. which is satisfying.

To me it is better than Wire/Sopranos in that you don't have to go online as much to keep track of the characters. The acting is first rate and the sex scenes/nudity are groundbreaking even for HBO. The gratuitous smoking is annoying but abates somewhat in the later episodes.

The show is more about developing the characters than action/violence. Feel free to watch a stupid bullet dodging movie if that is your thing. And yes Treme was lame.

I think the white folks ITT have more of a problem with NOTHING ****ING HAPPENING in like 11 hours of television. I mean I only watched the pilot, which was 7 hours long (going by my internal clock), but speaking as a white man that was my main beef.

Gratuitous smoking? That's how it really was. You kids are adorable with your naivete.

I am sure your distaste for the show had nothing to do with your habit of random capitalization but because you are a fan of the Transformer series. Different strokes for different folks.

I'm definitely much more of a fan of the 2007 Transformers movie than the pilot of The Duece. They have similar run times, but stuff actually happened in the Transformers film.

No offense dude, people tastes differ. I gave my honest opinion that I would hope some would find interesting on a random message board.
