The season is half over.

The Wire is one of my favourite shows ever. It was definitely not slow. You had to really watch it closely to make sure you didn't miss anything. Don't really get that with this show. I ended up surfing the net during the pilot due to it being so slow.

I've enjoyed it a good bit so far. The first 3 episodes have been mostly about world building, but there is a clear plot that is slowly playing out.

Spoiler:
The Police are becoming more and more corrupt and the enforcement of 'no go zones' is becoming less and less. Shady **** is bound to develop from this

Spoiler:
Maggie Gyllenhaal's character seems set up to capitalize on this and start her own production/movie business.

Spoiler:
I don't yet see where James Franco's twins fit into the sex world, but they are at the center of the world, so they are bound to play a role...or their bar will at least act as a setting to a bunch of stuff

The way Baltimore was the main character of The Wire, Times Square is the main character of The Deuce. I'm not convinced that the overall world of sex work in the 1970s is as big as the drug trade and degradation of the inner city, but I also am fairly uninformed as to Times Square during this period. I'm in for the long haul and think so far the show is progressing fine, if just a bit slowly.

"Baltimore was the main character of The Wire" doesn't really mean anything. And it isn't true for the first four episodes of The Wire, like at all. If you show 100 people the first 4 episodes of The Wire and ask them who the main character is, 80 people say McNulty, 17 say the goofy looking brown haired guy, what's his name, 3 people say Avon, 0 people say Baltimore.

In that vein people would say the main characters of this are Maggie Gylenhaal and James Franco...the world is still being built. It took probably 2-3 full seasons before I'd say Baltimore is the main character, because even in The Wire it took that long to build the world. Maybe the characters aren't compelling to you yet, but I surely find Candy and a lot of the street-level characters compelling. I think James Franco is doing a great job, but neither of his characters are super compelling yet.

I think saying "the main character" is the wrong way to put it, because The Wire is 100% a story about Baltimore.

frankie is the best part of this show. franco is killing it

so what is it with every character making the worst possible decisions?

at least candy eventually correctly went into the movies.

At least vaguely plot-like things are finally happening.

Ep. 5 should have been ep. 3.

I think the world of vice was the main character in The Wire and it's the same in this show as well and why it's interesting. Meanwhile Treme and that news show were just pure hot garbage from the same creator. I think the world of Vice is this man's forte so to say.

I'm digging this show and I'm not really watching much tv cuz it's all pretty boring other then the top notch shows. I was bored at first with this but it's got it's hooks in me now as it's a world I only know of from Joey Diaz types of characters when they talk about the old days.

edit: Generation Kill was awesome too so you can probably throw the vice is his forte line out but who needs vice when you have bullets flying at ya.

e5 decent and appear to be finally going somewhere. One mistake the show has made is putting in generic characters like Richie Apraio as Mob Boss #1 and Method Man as Pimp #2, where they could have given those roles to real actors who could have done something more unique with it.

Method man is awesome, with that said I get a just another dumb pimp vibe from him. Maybe you're just reading too much into it bruh. There's way more easier stuff to hate on with this show imo and it's showing in this thread.

Watching but it's for sure very, very slow. Could've had most of the significant stuff happen in ep2 and we'd have missed nothing.

Show is basically Treme but with NYC/porn/sex trade instead of NOLA/music/restaurants.

Liking this a lot more than Treme, which was alright but kind of sleep inducing to me

I think it's picked up just fine the last couple weeks, but they spent way too much time world building for a season that's only going to run 8 episodes.

Easily the best scene of the show. I just realized that there was not enough killing going on in the show. Imagine how much better it would be if there were. Like, the mob guys should be killing people left and right.

Nice reference to The Wire, the scene where Wee-Bey tells Avon that Cutty is, or used to be, a real hard ass. Bey quotes Cutty using the exact same words.

These guys are about business, killing is bad for getting that paper.
