And what's with Lori coming to NY to be a whore? She moving up to the big leagues, or something?

Vincent excepting his brother's debt is also a bit ridiculous. Why would he agree to that?

Anyway, I'll keep watching, hoping the characters get more interesting.

The young college student has promise.
Pretty much how I felt about it too. The recreation of the seediness and grime of Times Square is amazing, but none of the characters interested me very much. I'm not a fan of James Franco's acting either.

Only really interested in young college girl and the black pimps. Oh, and on the edge of my seat waiting to see how boy with premature ejaculation's arc unfolds.

Still haven't watched but I find the posts above interesting. If anything, I would've assumed they might have difficulties creating 70s New York, but writing the characters should've been their strong suits right? I mean, the 20th most interesting character in The Wire was more interesting that the leads in most shows

Not sure what the budget for The Deuce was, but given that HBO spent $100 million on Vinyl and Westworld, I would assume they had enough money to create 70s New York.

The 2 or 3 minutes behind the scenes piece that follows the pilot is about how they recreated 1970's NYC.

They did an amazing job recreating NYC but otherwise it seems like they remade Vinyl and it still sucks.

I agree with Dominic's post for the most part. 1971 NY was definitely the star of the pilot. I expect that it will get better but I could also see reviewers from NY jizzing themselves and not being able to be impartial.

Really? If this goes the same way as Treme (all character dev no plot) I'm out. That being said I thought the pilot showed promise.

agree with what some others have said, thought the pilot was aggressively meh. wow they really recreated 1971 NYC. oh yeah? i'll take your word for it. 30 minutes in i wanted it to be over. just completely bored, didn't care about anything. soldiered on, still didn't care about literally any of the characters after 90 minutes. impressive.

and yeah loads of cliches and plot wtfs afaict, writing that is way more in love with itself than any good. and even though i have nfi why half the characters are doing what they're doing, i can already tell where most of the storylines are going, and not just because they gave away a bunch of stuff in the trailers. i guess i'll keep watching, but i don't foresee it getting much better. oh, and i can't believe that David Simon was actually involved with writing this thing (co-writer on a few eps, including the pilot). after watching i assumed he just slapped him name on as a producer.

about the only bright spot for me was learning that Gbenga Akinnagbe (aka Chris Partlow) can actually act. after watching The Wire i just sort of assumed that he was ~Chris Partlow, as many of roles were filled by actors performing naturally as ~themselves.

What makes you think she is a good person? Nothing really gave me that impression. I got impression like she is savvy and cold.

Yah, if she had a heart of gold she would've given the kid another go on his b-day, but instead milked him for some more cash.

Somehow it was a mainstream show that was even sleazier than your average porn scene. I expected Harvey Keitel to show up as a detective. I felt dirty just watching episode 1.

Really like the strains pimp eye. I'm rewatching the wire right now and kinda cool seeing all those faces. I think there at least six so far . It's entertaining enough for me to continue. Could someone please explain the " paper" thing that keeps them out of or sends them to jail?

Lol wait til you see the porno scene and esp the director in the next episode. Not sure if that scene was meant to be hilarious.

I'm confused at the Franco/Franco brother relationship. He's joking around with him talking about the good ole days growing up, meanwhile taking on a massive gambling debt from the mob.
