I don't think I really care if we get fully developed characters with complex motivations. I'm thoroughly enjoying this as a slice of life, circa 1971 Times Square.

the actor playing CiCi really killed it and is saving the show. his ability to humanize that character is pretty amazing.

wait you think that character seems human? he comes off a complete manipulative sociopath. I guess it is great acting to convincingly act like a guy who is acting sincere. bc I dont think anyone is actually buying that he is sincere.

I remember reading/skimming parts of that book on the famous pimp Iceberg Slim who left the pimp game and raised a family. I also remember him writing about the loneliness of being a pimp. CiCi is immoral, but I do think he was being sincere with Lori when he confided in her.

Also, Lori has amazing nipples.

Watched the pilot, was intrigued throughout. Much better than I expected based on the reaction ITT. Will watch the rest asap, not reading comments meanwhile to avoid getting spoiled. But I think a big reason why people thought it was boring is because it's just David Simon's style but the subject matter isn't as immediately interesting as the drug stuff of The Wire. If the first season of The Wire had been s2, for example, I bet most people would have quit the show. I have very high hopes for this show, although I also predict it will get axed after 1-2 seasons.

I dunno man, stuff actually happened in S2E1 of The Wire. Like they found a container full of dead women? AKA the "inciting incident". What's the inciting incident for the first episode of The Deuce? I honestly have no idea and don't think there is one. And that **** is 90 minutes long ffs.

s1 of the wire started out pretty slow actually. the first episode made it seem like it would be another cheesy cop show and mcnulty in particular came off bad.

I liked the second ep better than the first. Think the first was just too long and i got bored.

Think this will end up being a pretty good show. Only thing im worried about is the characters arent great. CC is interesting and well acted. As is Vincent. The rest of the pimps are so generic. As are most of the hoes. The cops are all boring so far too. I cant stand the Maggie Gyllenhall character. The black ho could be interesting but the library stuff was kinda hacky.

The Wire had a central antagonist in "the system." This show just seems like a story about a bunch of pimps and hoes. Hopefully the show raises the stakes a little.

i'm with 'Keeed, this show blows

i still don't care about a single character or anything going on in this thing

and i even sometimes like stuff where nothing really happens

i like it, show doesnt have to have a classic protagonist/antagoinst for me to keep interest, as long as it feels authentic as a window to the 70ths NYC with all the grit im all over it. So far im liking it and I take it as a joyride through the lives of the past.

Vinyl did the same to me, The get down aswell albeit those shows did vastly differ to this one as I do not disagree with you guys of the lack of protagonist/antagoinist dynamic in this one. I just dont need it to stay interested.

Some ppl likes to watch westerns for the same reason, however ppl of the 70ths are still alive today and its more documented so it feels more real .

Ive been trying lately to cover WWII stuff. I just have a hard time with that particular era myself. /rant.

This.

Watched ep 2, felt on par with ep 1 to me.

The Francos and the sociopath pimp are interesting, Gyllenhaal's character feels a bit cliché but she's a great actress which helps quite a bit. Rest of the pimps are meh so far, feels like they are wasting Chris Paltrow so far. The young college student has promise, same for the Minnesota girl (+great tits). Couldn't care less about the cops so far. Obv 70s NY is the real mvp tho.

For me, I don't feel like the show needs to "step it up" or add anything too hardcore, I'd happily watch even if it offered nothing beyond the scope of what's happened so far.

I do think the show has its flaws tho, all writing-related imo. It's got a loooong way to go to even be considered the slightly less attractive cousin of The Wire.

On a scale of 1-10 I'd say the show is a solid 8.5 so far, and my disappointment level given my extremely high hopes for the show is something like 5/10. Def good tv still.

I liked the episode last night and I expect that it will get a lot better as the plot moves forward. My biggest complaint with the show is the sound. The background is so loud that I struggle to hear what the actors are saying at times. I am going to turn on CC for the next episode.

(I watch everything with subs, feels like a waste not to.)

ep3 was stellar, very similar to earlier two episodes, but that's totally fine.

this show has a plot?

there's not even really any conflict at this point
it's just: here are some characters, and here's another day in their life

but if you don't like or care about any of the characters? welp!

not my biggest complaint, but +1

i assume it's a very intentional the city the never sleeps thing, but kind of annoying to miss so much dialogue due to all the unnecessary noise

Glad to know it's not just me. Was seriously wondering if I was starting to show signs of hearing loss. Whoever is doing the sound mix needs to be slapped hard.

If they've been released within 48 hours they don't have to go back. One ho shows cop her paper, he says it's April 31st, get in. She says it's the 30th, April only has 30 days. She walked.

I like the show. I have biases. Love Simon and I'm willing to give him time to get his characters rolling. Love Maggie. Love the 'Mean Streets' NY vibe with garbage in the streets and blow jobs in phone booths.

The mother knowing what she does is odd.

I always remember Donnie Darko scenes on her close ups.

Ronnie is a really uninteresting character.
