i'm not going to read the thread to see if it was already said or to ensure that this is not a level, but no one talked like this during this era. however, people on the frontier cursed far more than your average city dweller type - milch tried writing authentic dialogue and he said it sounded like yosemite sam. so he substituted modern swear words to get the same effect.

HBO has season 1 eps 1-6 on demand (comcast) right now

I've seen bits and pieces of the series but I'm going to start from the beginning now.

LOL I feel totally retarded in saying this after only one episode, but this might be my favorite show of all time when alls said and done.

Its definitely going to be up there at the top with The Wire and Twin Peaks in my rankings.

Please post about things as you watch. I'd like to read about certain things you like/notice on first watch.

Enjoy the show.

Well, I'm about 10 minutes into episode two, and I'm fascinated by the doctor. While the other characters are somewhat predictable, I have no idea what to expect out of him, and he keeps me on my toes.

I also am amused that Bulluck and Swearengen just seem to hate each other from the get go, based on some kind of intuition. It's definitely beyond just business or a few words.

Yes I do know that their cursing was a lot different back then. Hell the worst thing you could say to another dude was to call him a son of a ***** - do that and you'd better have a gun in your hand. But if as you say Milch substituted modern cursing on purpose then I personally think that's a cop out. I mean, they talk about Milch being edgy and gutsy and stuff but it would have been far more gutsy to use period cursing and trust the audience to get it. For my money it makes the show kind of incongruous where you hear some flowery soliloquy in period language intermixed with f-word and c-sucker and so on.

Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the hell out of the show, but I definitely think the profanity is a weakness and not a strength - imo of course.

Would you be more comfortable if the dialogue used fornicator instead? Clavel made great use of that word in his Japanese saga's, mostly the Chinese sections of Noble House.

Historically correct is not always needed to get an audience to connect with a TV/theatrical show.

Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

I just rewatched the first 6 eps On Demand. God I miss this show. Al, Doc, Wu, Wus pigs. So awesome.

Why doesn't Trixie offer Alma the dope? It seems like she just really liked her right off the bat, is that it?

Also, I just realized the other night that Doc was also the voice of

Any word on if they'll be upping all of them over time? I'm trying to get my girlfriend into this show and this is the perfect way to do it.

Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

BTW I'm on disc four of season two right now. Have to agree with the others on the Calamity Jane character. She started off annoying but really grows on you. That scene with her foot tangled up in her horse's rigging was just awesome. Bullock meanwhile is the reverse. I'd like to see him shoot someone again just to get back to being interesting.

Is it the character, or the actor? I feel the same way and I didn't really like Justified either.

Actually that's interesting because Clavell's dialog from Tai Pan and Shogun is exactly what I was thinking of when I watched. I remember reading Tai Pan and getting a kick out of how Dirk said 'God's death' or 'God's blood' and so on as a way to curse. "Curse you and that godrotting heathen you came here with. God's death you'll get the both of you to your godrotting fornicating boat this instant or my seconds will call on you by morning." Hilarious.

In my opinion that kind of talk would have made Deadwood better, not worse. The way it is now it's like watching Gladiator or something and hearing Maximus call someone a c-sucker or a f-face. It just doesn't seem to fit.

Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

I would have too, but I think the audience in whole could have been turned off. The flamboyance of the characters soliloquies sometimes gets people trying to read too much into the story, in how they related to the era, could you imagine even more flourishes.

Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

perhaps watching 5 eps in one day wasn't a good idea. i need to ask a question that is probably obvious about episode 5.

who's blood was EB Farnum scrubbing off the floor in his hotel room?

Pretty sure it's the stain from Dan killing Tim Driscoll in the first episode.

Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

Just finished off season three in a marathon last night, cant believe i waited this long to watch.

Q's(1) What happened to Cy's original partner (the one who ended up stealing from him)? I'm assuming he Cy had him killed but i must have missed when it happened

(2) What was up with Bullock getting the sniffles? (when he raged extra hard maybe?)

If you are talking about Eddie I think he skipped town after giving Joannie a sizeable donation towards the Chez Amie.

The man who played Eddie is a fantastic sleight of hand master named Ricky Jay, and you'd have a blast watching some of his work on YouTube.

Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

OK thru first 6 eps, now i probably gotta wait a month for hbo to update their ondemand selections

the Doc is still my favorite character, followed by Utter. I thought the scene with Utter and the Sioux burial was fantastic.

This is probably the first show I've ever seen that I could simply just crank out start to finish. Even The Wire, etc, I felt like I had to take a break after 3-4 eps.

Just put season 1 in my netflix queue. I'm sure I'll like it. So far my favorite 1 hr drama show of all time is six feet under, I wonder if this will take it's place.
