Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

Just finished the series. <33333333

Maybe I misread, but there seems to be some conflicting ideas about the cancellation itt, as well as the link to the av club write-up. Was it cancelled after filming was finished, did Milch know of the cancellation and fashion some semblance of an ending or did Milch just sense it was going to get axed?

Spoiler:

Can't wait to rewatch it with my wife.

I'm half way through season 2 (I am up to episode 8, 7 was a bit slow and put me to sleep so I took a break for a few days) I may get back to it tonight.

There are a couple of 2+2 threads by poster Actual God which goes a little into depth re: Deadwood's cancellationi.

AG has actually worked with Milch in the past. Its interesting reading if you like his work.

Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

Question for Deadwood experts:

Just watched Season One again. Had never fully appreciated the finale, "Sold Under Sin" (the one where Cavalry arrives, Adams kills the Magistrate, Bullock beats Alma's father, Al kills the Reverend, Bullock anoints himself Sheriff, Bullock and Alma hook up, etc).

At one point, Cy tries to bribe the general into setting up a permanent detachment of soldiers, say 12-18 of them. "If I were Sheriff, I'd have you hanged!"

My Q: Why did Cy want a squad of soldiers in town?

Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

Cy wants to control the law in the town, to be, in effect, the law in the town. That's why he was going through all that bull**** with Con Stapleton. Con had nothing but the trappings of office, no real authority or force, with a private army at his command Cy could control damn near everything.

In the scene you reference, the Magistrate mentions that Cy told him he wanted the detachment to "buttress the sherriff's authority" which the hilariously dry general calls "indirection for such a tawdry purpose" in other words, he knows Cy wants a murder squad.

Which is also why Swegin supports Bullock being sheriff. He can't buy him off, but he knows Cy nor anyone else can either.

imo

Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

Awesome answer, Amp. Thanks.

I'm dating a girl who's never seen the show. I'm delighted to report that she loves it. And having seen every episode a dozen times already, I'm always there with the pause button to slow things down and let her take what's flying by her, or to answer questions (it's like when you watch football with a chick, and you patronizingly explain what's happening while she fights to get it).

Like when Cy sent Leon and Con down Ch*nks Alley to start trouble, she thought Cy was motivated by racism, and wanting revenge for handing the white Jimmy Irons over to Wu. I explain that Cy doesn't give a **** about Jimmy Irons, he just sees a chance to get people riled up against Swearengen, so he can make his move to become the big fish in town.

At this point, she hangs her head and calls herself dumb. I lift her chin and tell her I had to watch this 5-6 times before all that sunk in. I'd watch these shows on Sunday nights, then re-watch the West Coast feed three hours later, then catch a rerun later in the week, and I STILL wasn't absorbing everything that was thrown at me. Hell, it was only this latest viewing that made the preceding paragraph clear to me.

Sometimes I wish I just re-watched Deadwood instead of watching all these subpar shows they have on the TV nowadays.

In my mind nothing can ever be as good as Deadwood. It's just so ****ing perfect.

HOLY SH*T!!

Dority was Warren in "There's Something About Mary". That's some crazy sh*t.

That's all I have to add until I finish off the last 6 episodes, which will be in the next 2 days. So goddamned good.

Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

I have watched the first 2 seasons now and I am loving it. Al is just awesome but Bullock is starting to get on my nerves, he was pretty cool at the start but his character gets a bit tiring after a while.

Also at the beginning I hated Jane but she has grown on me and I find myself laughing at nearly every scene she is in. I cant believe they brought the same actor back to play another character, that is just so wrong imo and something no TV show should ever do.

Starting the final season tonight.

That interview was a really good read.

It can be so sad reading about the cast and crew's reaction to the cancellation of Deadwood.

Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

Finally finished off this show. F*CKIN' HELL!! One of my favorite TV experiences ever. I held off on the last 2 episodes for awhile. I just didn't want to see the end. I don't think I can put it my top 5 yet, but it's most definitely a top 10'er. After another viewing or 3 it'll probably creep up there though. I do think it's a top 5 all-time great though. Just a joy to watch. Sucks that more people haven't seen it. I only know of 1 other person. It's so damn quotable but no one will get the reference. I really can't think of anything I didn't like about it aside from the fact that it's done. Not a wasted moment otherwise. Bullock on occasion seemed a bit too intense, but not in a way that bothered me. Same with Jane. Didn't think I'd like her too much in the beginning, but she ended up being one of my favorites.

Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

She has several scenes in Season 3 that are just fantastic, especially from the episode with the 'every day takes figuring out all over again how to ****ing live' speech

her relationship with Doc/Joannie are two of the best on the show

Re: Deadwood Appreciation Thread

Just watched S02E11 - The Whores Can Come.

One of my favourite moments in all the series is when Al is getting a blowjob from the fat whore and he is just ranting, drinking and berating her while she goes to work. Then at the end of the scene he asks if she dyes her hair and she nods while blowing him. Absolutely hilarious.

Another thing I loved about Deadwood. The transitions from serious to hilarious were so quick and effective, especially when Al decided to talk **** to his crew.

The gimp is one of my favourite characters too:

"...and then I said 'Break the ****in' door down, Dan!'"

Just finished Season 3 the other night, why did this get cancelled!!??!!?? jajdlfajdfkla

Yeah the gimp has some fantastic lines. The one that stands out for me is when she shouts at Al for trailing his leg. I think its at the start of S02 after the fight with Bullock.

I'm enjoying this show but I wish there wasn't so much swearing. Even though Milch is an expert at that kind of dialog I really don't think that's how people talked in that era.
