lol @ anyone putting LOST over this show

Ian McShane is reportedly going to be playing the lead bad guy in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Now I don't know what to feel. Happy to see Ian McShane in a movie, but pissed off that they're making ANOTHER Pirates of the Caribbean.

I think mcShane was born to play the role of a pirate in something, so this is sweet.

Why would that possibly piss you off?

Because I cave in easily to pressure from family and friends to go watch crappy movies. 90% I'll end up going to see this and be wanting to gouge my eyes out after 15 minutes.

but it has ian mcshane, so all the scenes with him will be at least passable.

as expected, richardson was ralph richeson's first role in a TV show or movie.

As we fawn over the greatness of Al Swearingen, Charlie Utter, EB Farnum, and the esteemed Richardson...I can't help but think of the genius of these characters:

Aunt Lou Marchbanks - Classic scenes with her and Richardson in the kitchen and watching her gamble playing mah jong.

Steve the Drunk - The horse...enough said.

Andy Cramed - I can still hear Calamity Jane b**ching about him constantly saying "I apologize"

George Hearst - Gerald McRaney was flat out amazing in his portrayal of the narcissistic, murderous Hearst. Some of the scenes with him & Al were the finest of the series' run.

Geeze, I miss Deadwood

i just read the avclub's writeup on deadwood's final episode - i actually agree that even though the series didn't quite end right, that that's not really a bad thing; that stories with endings aren't necessarily superior to ones that don't quite get 'resolved'.

Finally starting in on Deadwood. Just got to the Kristen Bell episode (the "sister" and "brother" new arrivals). Obviously McShane is amazing, and absolutely robbed of an Emmy each year, but I think that the Reverend needs to get more love. He plays that role perfectly. His little twitches, and smiles are well timed to be both sincere and unintentionally humorous. Same goes for his seizures. They are pulled off realistically, and I both sympathize with him and laugh at the smooth segue from theological musings to jerky jiggles.

That seems a pretty low bar for historical accuracy.

and the town is also real.

Got any good Real Deadwood stories that weren't in the series?

one thing that was funny to me was that calamity jane claimed she tracked down jack mccall and brought him to justice. she claimed a lot, actually, and its unlikely she and wild bill were as good friends as the series portrayed.


also, wild bill was there before Seth Bullock got there, and was murdered just a day after Bullock arrived.

The town is basically just as it was pictured, indians, bandits, gambling and prostitution, and of course a bunch of gold mining as that was one of the richest deposits ever.

oh, also, James Butler Hickok gave himself the nick name "Wild Bill" :P although he was a badass. Custer (who discovered the gold in the Black Hills and caused the gold rush to that area, all in violation of a treaty with the Soix) said that Wild Bill was the perfection of manhood, or something really gay like that.

And Seth Bullock was a good friend of Teddy Roosevelt, who brought Bullock to Britain with him so the Brits could see the epitome of an American man.

Dustin Hoffman has been cast as the lead.

Just finished watching this show 5 minutes ago.

There's not much I can say that hasn't been said already ITT about the show. The guys who play Swearengen, Cochran and George Hearst were my favorites performances throughout the show. Also I agree with whoever stated that the guy who plays the Reverend does a remarkable job.

I don't have the faintest idea why this show got cancelled, any help?

My first trip to OOTV, as I just about never watch tv. But I just heard about the Dustin Hoffman signing, and I got excited. HBO declined to pick up "Last of the Ninth", but how could they possibly pass on a Dustin Hoffman series?

I was even more excited to hear that Dennis Farina will be involved. Next to Dennis Franz, Farina is probably the actor Best Suited To Deliver David Milch Dialogue.

(While checking Farina's IMDb page to confirm his involvement with "Luck", I stumbled over a HULU link to an old episode of "Hunter" that featured both Farina AND Franz. How could I not give that a shot? It's a two-part episode, I've only seen Part One so far, but Franz is awesome, the 80's music montages are awesome, and while Farina was barely in Part One, I'm expecting big things out of him for Part Two. Link.)

And that Wiki link above was a poor explanation for why DW got canceled. From what I've read, HBO fired their CEO because of a scandal, and their first order of business was to rein in spending, because that CEO had just spent $100M on "Rome", a ton of money locking up the cast of "The Sopranos"...and "Deadwood" sure ain't cheap with all the extras and livestock. The new bosses called in Milch and told him, "We need to cut your budget in half." Milch refused to do a half-ass DW, so he just folded the tent instead.

Someone asked for a recap of Milch's plans for Season Four, which he discusses on DVD. The answer is, "Nothing earth-shattering". There was no ending imagined, Milch says, "...because the story never ended in real life--the town is still there! At least, that's what I keep telling myself, to keep from burning things."

Plans for Season Four included a fire that burned down the whole camp (that happened in real life), Swearengen hitting the bottle so much that he becomes marginalized after the Gem burns down, compared to the powerful political force he once was (you could see that coming in Season Three, as he hit that bottle more and more), and Milch mentioned a new character that was to be introduced in Season Four: The Medicine Man, some snake-oil salesman that hoodwinks the town with his phony remedies, much to the chagrin of Doc Cochran (based on a real person).

EDIT TO ADD: When it was clear that there would be no Season Four, Milch gave some of the Medicine Man material to Jack Langrishe's efforts to cure Hearst's troublesome back pain.

He was in deadwood for less than a month before he died.

Yeah, I was bummed that Hickok got iced so quickly. But remember, the show is about the rapid evolution of the town, and the trial of Jack McCall was the first step for these folks to govern themselves.
