I hate Calamity Jane. Feels like the actress is doing an SNL skit. I know most like her but I'm always taken out of the moment or bored when she's the focus.

Really appreciated Farnum, Tolliver, and Richardson on my rewatch. One of my favorite moments of season 3 was when Richardson delivered a note pinned to his shirt to Al. Al joked to someone to stick the pin in Richardson's eye and all he did was close his eyes really hard. Love Wu as well.

I know what you mean about Calamity Jane feeling like a skit because she is so over the top, the thing to me is that she is ALWAYS that way so then it becomes real and the commitment to the character is appreciated.

If that makes any sense.

Are you kidding? Jane is amazing. Perhaps you haven't been exposed to enough alcoholics in your life, but she ****ing nails it. That, and just aimlessly dwelling in the lost bewilderment of losing your tether to the earth (Wild Bill). The movie made her arc that much better.

On rewatches, Cy is probably my favorite to examine. His is such a dark path.

Edit: This post on Jane from the Deadwood subreddit says it better than I can:
Quote:
I won't be as eloquent as many of these hoopleheads, and I normally prefer to lurk only, but I feel I've gotta weigh in here in defense of my good friend Jane.

Jane always had a penchant for drinking and a bit of a hot streak, but I interpret that as constantly having to prove herself in a totally male-dominated space. She loves Bill so much, you can see it in episode one. I attribute her selfish and self-destructive behavior to mourning his loss. You don't get over something like that very quickly.

But we see such brilliant moments of selflessness and compassion in her. Coming across spallpox-ridden Andy in the woods (who was left to die)—and in the throes of that same grief, she puts aside her selfishness to help a fellow man. And then goes on to help Doc Cochran when there's an outbreak in the camp.

Her protective instincts to care for Alma's future daughter when she's under Doc's care are incredibly telling, and her fear of Swearengen hint at a childhood of abuse by a male or many men—probably the creation of her thick exterior and reluctance to allow herself to get close to anyone. Again, Bill was maybe her only exception.

But she does let down her guard throughout the series, and as her character heals and grows—to Joanie at the Chez Ami; to Charlie Utter, her last connection to Bill; to Trixie, Alma, and the girl—who Bill handed over personally to Jane to deliver to Doc Cochran after finding her next to her dead family; even she and Doc have a knowing, playful relationship, albeit tense at times.

I see Jane as incredibly strong, but incredibly vulnerable, and constantly doing her best to navigate between those two poles, in a time and place that makes it impossible to do so, especially for someone like her.

I think she carries her grief throughout the series. I think she likes to drink, but drinks mostly to deal with her past and the loss of her best friend. I think the way she handles her grief, the sick, and children—as well as the people who stick with and root for her (Charlie, Joanie, Doc) show us the depth of her compassion.

At this point it's needless to say, Jane is one of my favorite characters in the show.

I love Jane. I thought she stole every scene in Season 2.

I didn't buy the romantic relationship Jane and Joanie had, though.

That and the acting troupe were the only weaknesses in Deadwood.

I'm just getting to that and I agree. There are already too many great characters without adding more with the acting troupe. Jane and Joanie's relationship seems forced. You could see it coming a mile away but I kept hoping they wouldn't go there.

I found Jane annoying at first too, but now I appreciate the brilliance of Robins performance.

Some of you are forgetting that they were supposed to do another season. Milch has said that he was going to flesh out the troupe arc and tie it all together.

I didn't find Joanie and Janes romance to be forced at all tbh. Made a lot of sense, actually. *shrug*

I wasn't a big fan of Jane in the beginning either but I really like her now and think she is hilarious with her dialog and insults.

One thing that threw me off about Jane in the beginning was this:

Based on things that I read about the real Calamity Jane I thought that she was more of a bad ass type.
But they portrayed her on the show as almost cowardly so I was constantly getting pissed off at her during my first viewing because I was expecting something different.

The romance with Joanie always seemed like it could be legit. Joanie was always a mother hen in the sex bidness, and she liked women sexually. She saw a vulnerable and potentially very attractive kind hearted Jane and she wanted to take care of her.

I thought she was just cowardly when she went up against Al.

2 episodes plus the movie left. Been an HBO subscriber for 15-20 years and may rage quit after I finish this. Season 3 has been an incredible build up to what I assume will be nothing.

Just finished the show and the movie. The movie felt like a do over of the final episode in season 3. The show was brilliant but I was disappointed in the final episode. I expected a cliffhanger or some resolution with Hearst, not that he is just up and leaving for Montana. Not sure how HBO cancelled this. It has to be the worst cancellation of all time.

farnum was my favorite

and yeah, calamity jane scenes were the worst, i understand the goal was deconstructing a glorified figure into the degenerate reality but it was painful to experience

the swearingen arc was legit - i heard that there's a movie and that's probably best not watched

The movie woulda been good if it was a season long. It felt condensed and rushed.

I marathoned the show right before the movie came out and with the way the movie was made I would have preferred no movie at all.

Bumping this thread because I just rewatched S1. And all I can say is, I defy anyone to name a better hour of television than the finale of Season 1 ("Sold Under Sin"). Closing moments of Doc dancing with Jewel, saying "I'm as nimble as a forest creature", with Al looking down over the scene, just gets me every freaking time. Incredible episode.
