Halfway through Season 1 and the writing is top notch. It’s too early to judge how good the show is, but I’m certain Al Swearingen is a top 5 all time character. That was clear from the first time he was on screen.

YES! That's how I always describe it, Shakespeare in the wild west.

This man knows what's up. He may jump right to #1 before you know it.

To me, it's the rare type of show that is better on rewatches than the first time through.

I agree 100%. The dialogue is so rich that multiple viewings are necessary to truly appreciate everything.

Time for a rewatch.....

So right after GoT ends, right?

Deadwood is still the show I use as a yard-stick to judge every other series.

I know it’s good, but I’m talking about how it compares to the greats.

It's the ****ing greatest. It's everything the greats aspire to be.

If you aren't smitten after the "Ballad of Wild Bill," I don't know what to tell you.

Ken Burns The West is on Netflix and is a very thorough history of the American West from 1800-1900. Some good historical back ground that helps to understand Deadwood even better. There's probably many subtle conversations that will make more sense with a better understanding of the time period.

Probably the best dialogue ever, its like every word/sentence is perfect. Al Swearingen one of the best characters ever.

We like to call him Al Careingen round these parts.

Here's a tiny little thing that just recently occurred to me. I have no idea why I thought of it, I haven't seen the episode in a while:

So Hearst sends the Pinkertons out into the streets to stir up some ****. The head Pinkerton walks into the hotel, and cuts into the line for breakfast.

The guy he cuts in front of remarks loudly, something like, "I must've turned invisible overnight!" The Pinkerton replies, "I saw you, Drummer," then steps on his foot, breaking it.

I think he called him "drummer" twice. I never understood that reference....but now, out of the blue, it hits me.

This guy meets with Swearengen later, tells him he served with Capt Turner in a Union Army regiment in the Civil War (Al responds that *he* spent that time "in the famous C***S***ers Brigade," eliciting a laugh).

It just now hits me that calling someone a drummer is saying to them, "You're no fighter, you're the guy who marches with us and plays the drum. You're more boy than man." It's a put-down.

Only took me 12 years or so to figure that one out.

Better enjoy this one, he can't have too much left in the tank.

Can anyone see the tweets in the post above this one? Why is embedding Twitter harder than embedding YouTube?

They were two tweets by @wearlbrown quoting Milch's frustration with the Alzheimers a couple years ago, when he vented while looking for pages to read to Brown. Paraphrasing, "Every day is like that movie Groundhog Day, I need to start over because I can't for the life of me remember what I wrote the day before."

Here's a Sepinwall piece from Rolling Stone. A *lot* of quotes from the cast expressing joy at reuniting. A lot of emotion...I swear, it almost feels like an episode of the show.
