I'm quite enjoying the show, even though I agree with a lot of the comments here.

I think going into it with fairly low expectations, then everyone hating it, helps...

The parents episode was a lot better but the ex-wife losing her **** and spilling the beans made no sense. She had all of the information that was presented at dinner beforehand (knows Pete and his mom have a weirdly close relationship and that the mom is passive agressive). So why would she flip out and tell the parents about the divorce? Didn't buy and took me out of the show.

This show seems really amateurish and makes me wonder if Judd Apatow is just super overrated. Maybe his successes were more a product of his supporting cast rather than his personal contribution.

And is Hannibal Burress really revered that much in the comedy world? I'm very in to stand up and was confused by that. He's very good but he's not playing stadiums or anything.
First, the Indian girl is Aparna Nancherla. If you are 'very in to stand up' you should recognize her. The show is using real comedians, some of them are inexperienced actors. The other option, would be to have actors play stand ups, and that would be much worse. Presumably, they'll improve over time.

Second, Hannibal Buress is absolutely that big of a deal in the comedy world. I saw Hannibal drop in unannounced last month and everyone went nuts. No, he isn't playing stadiums but there are only like 10 comics who do that. The idea that a group of young comics would rush to catch Hannibal do a set is completely believable.

All the inside baseball comedy stuff seems fine

problem with the show is that it's very rarely even a little but funny

Just watched 3 eps. Show is definitely meh. Pete Holmes needs to be more interesting. Other characters are all decent. Will keep watching bc I like stand up, but the show is not that good

Seen the whole season now.

I think the idea for this show was pretty good, the whole premise of the wife cheating / guy being on his own for the first time / his wife's lover really wanting to do good by him besides the sleeping with his wife thing has so much potential. But it just fell really flat and somehow was not funny at all. I was constantly tilted about how it should have been a lot better and they just wasted so much potential everywhere. I was also annoyed by the 90s cameras they used, I know they went for some cool nostalgic effect but it just annoyed me the whole time as well. I think I'll keep watching for the comedian cameos and in hopes of actually funny Pete/Wife/Lover triangle stuff. They really need to figure out a way to make it more funny, which is not a thing I say often about a tv show.

The show is terrible. And the problem is Pete Holmes isn't funny. As others have mentioned if you put someone else in the lead role it has the chance of being funny -- although the material is pretty terrible. With Pete Holmes, this show was dead on arrival.

This. I think the writing was the issue not Pete Holmes as much. I hated the zero to hundred for no reason scenes the most. i.e. the wife freaking out over Pete's mom's quirks that she's already aware of. And also her jumping in to the baptism pool. It's almost like the writers forgot to make it interesting or a comedy until the last minute.

I like this show, for the same reasons I liked Entourage (play along at home with the rags-to-riches performer, sprinkled with awesome cameos).

I cannot recommend this show, for the same reasons I cannot recommend Entourage.

entourage is a very easy show to recommend to a large % of the population, especially the earlier seasons which are great.

i would struggle to think of a single person that I would have confidence would enjoy this show.

I cannot fathom how anyone could compare this show to entourage.

I loved the first few seasons of Entourage at the time, however it does not hold up well at all. It is some version of a soap opera and the cameos aren't clever or interesting anymore, by today's standards. Would not recommend the show to anyone nowadays.

I like you but thats a terrible analogy for what you wrote.

don't make the statement you made then try n pretend you meant something completely different when someone expresses shock at what you wrote.

either defend your position or don't write something terribly misleading cuz I know ur not dumb enough to actually mean what ur saying in this post after writing what you did in ur OP.

also the whole premise of your reasons for liking both makes no sense cuz at no point do they make us want to experience living pete's life.

the main reason the first few seasons of entourage were so great was you wanted to live that life and experience what they got to do everyday.
it was a male fantasy of fast cars beautiful women amazing parties and total indulgence.

crashing is nothing like that and I can't see how anyone would ever fantasize about switching places with holmes aside from the most hardcore wannabe stand ups.

This show just makes me think how much better the writing is on Silicon Valley. In SV there is a main plot with side storylines where these different arcs converge/payoff after multiple episodes. In Crashing its a single meandering arc with some short poorly thought out minor character arcs. None of which lead to anything or have any lasting impact on the main character or the plot.

For example, the episode where Artie takes Pete to the show in upstate NY and tells him to not let him do drugs. That's a solid premise. However, that doesn't lead anywhere beyond Pete ending up at that woman's house. After that episode the Artie character has no effect on Pete beyond allowing him a place to crash every once in a while. A better approach to the season 1 writing would've been that Artie is begrudgingly appreciative and chooses Pete to open for him on the road for a while and to also act as his addiction sponsor. Pete's involvement with Artie could alienate him from some people in the business which causes tension between them.

I like you, too. But I don't know what you're after here.

I mentioned two different tv shows in the same breath. Their connection is completely tenuous. The only comparisons between the two shows, are the two I mentioned:

--I like them both
--I don't think either is good enough for me to vouch for them in a recommendation.

Cliffs: Typical, cringe-worthy YTF thread, where OP ignores all the advice ITT and things don't go as well as they could've.

I did a couple open mics up in SF....a bunch of old school 2p2 legends including partygirlUK were at my 1st ever performance and I think my 2nd time on stage is up on YouTube somewhere.

I was just doing it for fun and would love to do some more but now that I'm down in LA it seems impossible to find some low key open mic venues as everyone is trying to get discovered and it's very hard to get stage time.

doesn't seem like there is a place like I had up north where it wasn't a bunch of ppl with head shots etc.

Dude that's just not true. There are a bajillion open mics here in LA, enough where you can find one (or several) with whatever kind of vibe you're looking for. If you want a couple suggestions I can make them.

ya would appreciate that....I never claimed I did extensive research just the places I found all were populated by ppl trying really hard to get discovered.

I'm sure there are a bunch of coffee houses etc that have general open mics for all different types of art (poetry music etc) but from the limited research I did into actual comedy venues I didn't come across any laid back open mic spots where it wasn't very difficult to get stage time.

I would def love to hear your suggestions, thanks.

I can imagine open mics in LA being pretty interesting. Some genuinely super talented people, and then a ton of people who will do literally anything to get on a stage, and show their face.

Very true. The spectrum of people that go to open mics are anything from the pros at one end, to regular joes just looking for an opportunity to tell some jokes on a stage or improve their public speaking skills. They're open mics, not booked shows, so they're not exclusive at all. You show up, sign up, and maybe have to purchase a drink or pay a couple bucks and you get your 3-5 minutes. That's why it's so bewildering to hear rbk say that it's hard to get stage time and that it's full of just people hoping to get discovered. It's literally the opposite.

You don't get discovered at open mics. You do 1000s of mics, and through the other comics you meet, you start to do booked shows at bars, coffee shops, and comedy clubs. Then over time, you build up those connections to try to get people to take you on the road with them, or you get passed at a club which means that you become a regular in their rotation of comics. You can also submit for comedy festivals and things like that.

rbk if you want to find some mics, check out thecomedybureau.com and badslava.com. They have daily listings of mics going on in LA with all pertinent info.
