"Strike first!"
"Strike hard!"
"No mercy!"

Anyone watching this?

Here's the trailer for Cobra Kai...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPhbnsrkDlA

"Cobra Kai takes place thirty years after the original film and follows a "down-and-out Johnny Lawrence, who seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo, reigniting his rivalry with a now successful Daniel LaRusso, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi. The show is about two men addressing past demons and present frustrations the only way they know how: through karate."

Damn!! I thought it was a movie. Is it at least releasing all the eps at once? Don't really want to bother with a weekly version.

If it is meant to be funny, could be good. If it is actually serious then I can't see how it would be anything but awful. Will definitely try it.

Hoping for some "bop bop on the beach" with Elisabeth Shue.

wasn't this sort of the plot of Karate Kid 3?

still johnny lawrence is one of the GOAT DB villains so could be entertaining.

Funny story, I started training shotokan karate with my kid 9 years ago (both black belts now). After we'd been doing it a couple months and I started to get to know the people and feel comfortable, I could joke around a bit.

We were stretching with a partner and it is really painful when you are pushing it. I was grimacing and grunting as I was doing it and the sensei comes by and says "That's it Drogo, there is no pain!"

I respond by yelling as loud as I could "THERE IS NO MERCY IN THIS DOJO!"

Some laughter from the class (not as much as I expected, probably most of them not old enough) but the sensei just gives me a puzzled look and says absolutely deadpan; "That's right, there is no mercy in any dojo."

He was an older Peruvian guy, very old school when it came to martial arts. Had absolutely no idea what I was referencing probably. His response was funnier to me than my reference. I still bug him about it. ("How can you not know that quote!")

He was actually 22 playing a 16 year old in the first one. So by the time #3 rolled around he was 27 playing an 18 year old. Not a big stretch.

Sweet merciful crap that looks awful. So much for my hope it was going to be a parody of itself.

Will still watch just cause I have to try.

Not gonna lie Karate Glow is probably the best possible way they could have done this and it doesn't look that bad at all.

Drogo - not sure if serious?

It's obv not taking itself seriously(whereas the films did).... that trailer couldn't have been better.

Maybe I'm tone deaf today. I thought it looked like they were doing it straight. I'll watch it again.

If Danielsan was suddenly some kung fu master it would have come across as an ego project. Him douchily thinking he's being righteous by beating up his washed up high school bully may be the perfect way to handle this.

I read a perfect review yesterday. “I’ve watched a lot better shows that I enjoyed less than Cobra Kai”.

Watched the first two episodes, the reviews are confusing me.

Overall, yeah it is not terrible(although a lot of what I liked was nostalgia related because I'm dead in the wheelhouse demographic of people who will remember the original fondly, someone unfamiliar with it wouldn't have that), but it isn't great either.

The idea of flipping Daniel and Johnny's role is interesting and a good one but if that is the plan then why is Johnny so unlikable and awful? He is a failure at best and a horrible bully (still) at worst. Kind of hard to root for the bullied kid Johnny is teaching when Johnny is consistently someone we hate.

If the writers get their **** together and make Johnny a flawed character who is sometimes bad but that we can relate to, they'd have a great show. As it is now he is just a douchebag 24/7.

Will give it an episode or two more but they are hanging by a thread for me.

Window line was genius obviously.

Agree with a lot being said here, I just can't bring myself to subscribe to more streaming services. Netflix, hulu, hbonow and prime (with a floating sub between starz/showtime) are it for me, in a perfect world cbs all access and youtube would merge with something above but i'm sure there'd be something to prevent that.

I see this series as a slow redemption story for Johnny but I could be wrong, the fact that he is investing time in the kid at all is why I'm leaning that way.

I felt like the poolhouse is perhaps hand built by Daniel which I thought was a cool throwback. I'm glad they didn't make Daniel into an uber wise reform of Miyagi, he's still got the inflections of the student from years ago, just older and bound to make mistakes.

Are all the eps available for stream right now? If so I may burn my free trial to watch this and vsauce's mind field.
