There is some overlap but, of course, Walter was much more cool-headed, methodical, and saw the big picture.
The new generation in the US and in the developed countries are not making families now, and their not taking low paying dead end jobs, and they jump from corporation to corporation before they can get dumped or abused for no good reason. They know that pursuing the middle class American dream (family and home and job security) can be a risky nightmare. There is no safety net.
Walter says he did it all his crimes for "himself" but maybe he was fooling himself there or the writers were trying to placate the audience. The show often portrayed him as forever bonded with his wife and children. If had been a lifelong single man would he ever had become Heisenberg? I don't think so.
