I remember Van Alden giving the nanny the flowers. He seems like he is becoming more self aware and trying to be normal.

Re: Boardwalk Empire: Season 3

He was hovering int the room while holding flowers in hands and talking to her. She seemed to glance at the bouquet and smile in anticipation like women usually do when somebody approaches them with flowers. Later he turned away and said "these flowers are for you" while walking away from her.

I thought the nanny became his wife. I'm guessing the second child is theirs.

Re: Boardwalk Empire: Season 3

Really solid. Liked just about everything. I'm happy Capone is going to get more screen time with Torrio gone. Van Alden as an FBI-agent-turned-criminal is a nice way to progress his story. I liked Rosetti and wanna see him go violent on more dudes. Didn't expect Harrow to do Manny like that but it was awesome.

I'm most interested to see how they intertwine Vegas into the story.

Yes and? Do you disagree with my premise that Capone will get more attention because of this?

Lol, yeah, I think more and more the focus of the show is going to be Van Alden becoming a normal, functioning member of society.

I think BE is really picking up steam, and am hopeful that it can become an elite show over time.

Have to say though, in the florist standoff, if I was a standover man with my hand on a gun, I wouldn't be too intimidated by a guy who apparently has heavy arsenal in a closed briefcase. That may have been mentioned. I try not to read every post in these threads to avoid brain rot.

I don't think it'll really affect how much attention he gets, Capone was always going to be an important part of the story

she's necessary, everyone knows that, but at the same time... the male characters are the draw of the show, and people don't consider how necessary Margaret is when they come here to post "i hate margaret."

basically every woman on this show sucks in that regard. im just happy Lucy is gone.

Women be gettin' in the way of TV gangsters doing gangster ****

That said, I personally find myself more annoyed with Margaret than with some other female characters on TV, and I don't think it's that she's a bad character necessarily; I just have little patience for people who do stupid things out of superstitious guilt, plus, to paraphrase, you can't be half a gangster's wife. She seems to have a mild case of Carmela Soprano Disease where she wants to luxuriate in the spoils of her husband's crimes but also wants to run to her Catholicism to demonstrate what a good person she is when the guilt gets to be too much.

I think even the most adamant Margaret haters would put her leagues above Skylar. Dear god what an awful character.

I would dislike Margaret the person a lot more than Skyler the person- and can see hating the character.

But to me her story is interesting and complaining that she's getting air time just seems sad.

lol what is so complex about her? My hate for her and Skylar is just about the same: both are extremely simple characters, lacking any sort of identity. The problem with them is not that they are women, but they are nothing more than women. It almost always feels like they writers were like "ok now that we are done we the awesome crime story line, what the **** do we do about these women characters". Every sort of change that they go through seems forced. The conflicts facing them lack any real nuance, the rationale behind their actions just seem like an afterthought. It would be easy to accept if only they would not make these weak characters the focal point of the show.

Is she really your example of a woman character who doesn't suck?

I'm guessing Kelly MacDonald could win you back over if she agreed to do full-frontal.

Re: Boardwalk Empire: Season 3

margaret could win me back if all the crap like the affair with the chauffeur, philanthropy, old family drama, rift with nuggy, involvement in the hospital, her moral dilemma, her daughter's ailment, her spiritualism are actually going somewhere interesting and will start adding up to something fast. in the first episode it looked like the writers are intertwining some stories and tightening up with things, so that's promising.

Except that the bolded really isn't true (and is true of plenty of male characters nobody hates). The "I don't hate them because they're women" thing falls apparent when these sorts of critiques are so incorrectly and elusively applied to female characters.

no, the boded is true. just because my critique is elusive, doesn't mean it is incorrect. i can be much more detailed when prompted.

It already has? With Bugsy already being a character and the clear reference to LV in the last episode I'd be shocked if they didn't expand on it in the near future.
