Edit: actually nevermind, maybe they were in NY.

I thought they were in AC for some reason which is why the actor is in a hotel, but NY makes more sense.

Saying "HBO" here is silly. HBO doesn't really influence their show runners in that fashion.

You seem to have missed the point again. There was still not a scene in this episode of nucky taking care of things in ac after one of the biggest hits to his outfit and his authority occured.
You're trying to argue that Nucky's response wasn't believable when you haven't seen nearly enough on screen to know what Nucky's response actually was.

Who else was he going to send? He just lost a several guys, he keeps Owen by his side. Eli's not a guy you have do that sort of thing. Even if he does have other faceless muscle- what it tells you is that his obsession with Billie is such that he's pulling out the big guns.

The show has given us really imperfect information about Nucky's organization, and at this point is being pretty coy with his own motivations and actions. I think people ITT are making some assumptions about what should be happening when we just have no way to know.

He doesn't need to send muscle at all. Eddie knows Nucky pretty well and isn't going to say no to him. When Eddie was talking about his contract all it would have taken is Nucky saying "This isn't a request" and that would have been the end of it. Or he could have sent literally anyone else with the message "Mr. Thompson strongly suggests you reconsider." This an an effete man who sings and dances for a living, not some hardass with strong mob ties.

edit: oh I see that I misread that sentence. Everything in that post was already addressed in my original critique of the episode.

As far as who he could send: How about the other guy who went with Chalky and random henchman 1-100?

Why not Chalky though?

Every reason why you wouldn't send him is just an assumption. Maybe the point is that Nucky wanted the scariest dudes possible because of how much Billie means to him.

So now I can use my previous response:

It's season 3 ffs.

We've seen that Chalky is a pretty important guy who has some important stuff to do.

The other guy is far scarier anyways, and Chalky probably has someone else who is scary and capable of getting the job done among henchmen 1-100. Yes thats an assumption, but after two seasons of watching this show I think it's a good one.

It doesn't matter how many seasons the show has been on when nothing in any of those seasons supports your point.

...

In these past two seasons you haven't seen a single scene where Chalky looks like he's a busy, important guy?

Really?

Really?

Yeah no way does it make sense for chalky to haul up to NY to intimidate some guy. I am a master of suspending my disbelief but even for me this created some incongruity.

I thought the plot point with his daughter had potential, despite some lazy writing.

We know Chalky is important. We don't know at all that he's so important that he wouldn't do this for Nucky.

Nucky could be killing two birds with one stone. Maybe he was already sending Chalky to NY for some other primary reason.

Nucky might have changed his mind about letting Eddie off the hook after their meeting. The way Eddie tried to race out of the room, forgetting his Vodka bottle, basically showed that they aren't really friends, and Eddie is just afraid of Nucky. That might've felt like a betrayal to Nucky.

As for who ordered the hit, I assume(d) it was Rothstein. I don't see Lansky, Luciano, or Nucky going behind Rothstein's back on something so big. Some interesting points in the thread to suggest otherwise, but I'd still go with Rothstein, like Nucky with Eddie, reconsidering his position offscreen. Hrm, writing that out makes it sound stupid. Like why would such big decisions be made offscreen. Whatever, I'm sticking with it.

he's talking about Alan Sepinwall the tv critic, not Arnold Rothstein

dids: chalky runs his own thing in AC - it's clearly the writers having to put michael kenneth williams into a scene. now it functions well because he's amazing at being intimidating, but it doesn't make all that much sense within the context of the show. fun scene regardless.

i finally see where the margaret storyline is going - she's going to be torn between her philanthropic ambitions and having to stick around nucky.

thought the lucy danzinger line was nice

Gyp has to have more than just those guys in Tabor Heights, right? Plus the police are on his side, not that they'd come in as reinforcements.

Sending one guy makes more sense but it's practically a suicide mission. He knows he's going past armed guards and up into a dead end that he'll have to shoot his way out of.

This. There was no intimidation going on in that scene. Just two men wanting to see a gay man sing and dance. Nothing wrong with that.
