The Michael Shannon character is so random now that he just seems to be there for token shock scenes every now and then. Hopefully he's about to get gangster though.

They should basically never go an episode without developing each of Lucchiano's, Gyp's and Capone's storylines for most of the time. The fact that they can't seem to work Chalky's character into the story in a meaningful way is pretty bad too.
Huh? Wasn't it Rothstein that tried to kill Gyp by sending Bugsy?

This to me kinda reinforced Nubby's line to Slater about "If it goes the wrong way then someone else is to blame." Meaning that he didn't arrange the hit himself with his men.

Seems like it was a mutual decision between Nucky & Rothstein, with Rothstein doing the leg work and sending his men (Gyp giving his room number during the meeting was some easy foreshadowing).

What's the chance Gyp thinks Rothstein is in on it?

Presume the look at the dead paperboy was just to confirm that to the viewer.

Re: Boardwalk Empire: Season 3

Ya, it seemed pretty obvious just a simple connect the dots. I dont know why they did it with 1 dude tho, Gyp walks around the town a decent amount and doesnt seem like he's all that secure as a target. It seems a simple drive by as he ate at the diner or walked about/ stood outside gambling with the fellows woulda had a higher chance of success and the ability to squash his goons too.

The whole hit is botched in my eyes from start to finish. 1 lone gunman walking into the lions den with bodyguards around just seems like to much of a gamble, which is funny cuz you'd think Rothstienn would be like us and see all the angles and the %s associated with them.

Rothstien (this character) failed as a gambler in my eyes.... maybe he didnt know the particulars tho and it was assigned to the underlings.

Seems to me sending in an army would be more risky, and you'd be less likely to reach Rosetti. Rothstein knew the paper carrier would be let up to his room w/o any type of pat down, etc. It was a smart move.

Re: Boardwalk Empire: Season 3

Ok then, just Bugsy and the driver. They pull up to the diner while Rosetti eats or just when he's walking down the street and just spray him up with a tommy gun. So many more ways to make the worms meat that are more likely to be sucessful and the gunman is more likely to live. As it is its good tv but unrealistic.

I found this on another forum I frequent and thought it was pretty cool. The gay jewish actor dude who just got intimidated by Chalkie is based on this fella.

Yeah, the guy that plays Eddie Cantor is phenominal. He has the voice and mannerisms down cold. I'm a big fan of old Cantor movies. But I don't really like the storyline here but I like that the Cantor character is getting more screen time.

Re: Boardwalk Empire: Season 3

Explain this for me:

Rothstein spells out why it's bad for him to kill Rossetti. He has bigger relationships with bigger mobsters in NY that are tied to Gyp. He can't go to war over this.

And then later, he tries to have Gyp killed. ...Why? What's the plan? Why do it with Bugsy - who Gyp has met - and can now tie back to Rothstein - and not tell Nucky, "this is your problem, not mine. Deal with it or I'm finding another supplier."

And about supplying Rothstein with booze, it seemed like Gyp had a good plan. Tabor Heights is closer to NY and ships can go there and unload booze just as easy as they can in AC.

What am I missing?

Also, glad to see Inga or Hilda or whatever take control and BONG the Fed in the head.

I figured them talking while Owen and Lucky chilled was them hashing the plan out and Im sure that we will get more info later. I agree tho that they botched that hell out of that assassination. So many ways it ties back to Rothstein.

I am generally not one to complain about stealing shots, but JFC at that Taxi Driver stolen shot. I hope there isn't a "You talking to me" scene next week.

Re: Boardwalk Empire: Season 3

The Van Alden stuff is really close to an edge for me- but they pulled it off.

Nucky is becoming so frustrating. Loved the non apology to Mags though.

Stephen Root is so ****ing great and James Cromwell is just a ****ing boss. That dude has gravitas like a mother****er.

As a one shot thing I liked the theatre stuff- but I hope that's about the end of it.

The bit with the train sound during Van Alden snuffing the guy was corny- and I don't love the device of keeping us in the dark with Nucky and AR obv hatching something out while we're meant to think they're arguing (but I figured what was coming once Gyp said his hotel room and they lingered on AR.). I just think it would have been more interesting in this instance to let the audience in on things. Deception that's only aimed at the audience annoys me.

Beyond that I really liked it.

I thought this ep was generally baffling and have no good answer to your other points, but Rothstein would pretty clearly not be interested in going into business with Gyp. Rothstein's all business, Gyp sees everything as personal.

Complete aside, but I liked Margaret's observation that Nucky's not comfortable with a girl who can look after herself, and asked what he's rescuing Billie from. The way Nucky exerted his influence to extend the run of Billie's show was completely unoriginal in how it was handled, but was a nice highlight to that point.

I think that storyline is going in interesting places. Nucky's neediness and controlling tendencies with Billy are likely to end in disaster for him, and maybe both of them. But now obviously the facade has fallen away completely with him and Margaret, so it will be interesting to see what happens if he does end up butthurt. He's made it explicitly clear that she's wholly reliant on him, and obviously the fate of sex-education rests on them being together, so stakes are high.

Sepinwall doesn't see why a man would be obsessed with Billy. Sepinwall is a crazy person.
