Gyp is a bad character so far.
I see it differently, in that I don't like where it's heading for Owen, he might get "replaced" by Harrow at Nookie's behest.

Seems like I'm in the minority here but I thought it was the worst ep of the season so far, didn't really progress any story lines that much. Half the show was Owen, Nuggy, and a newly introduced kid all stuck in a basement, and then the kid gets killed. If the whole point of that was for Knocky to send a message to Owen then surely there was a better way to do it that didn't need to chew up half and ep. Meanwhile the story lines of Chalky, Van Alden, Richard - i.e the characters we want to see more of - have stalled.

The scene with LL with the Italians was amazing. I could watch scenes from NY and Chicago all friggen day.

Worse though was the way she was regularly held to significantly higher moral standards than Tony.

Skylar I don't think is a great character, but I don't think Breaking Bad is a great show. She has a distinct arc though, and her breakdown is a reflection of Walter's actions. The show wouldn't work as well without her.

Margaret is intrinsically important to Boardwalk Empire simply because she is part of Nucky's home life, and it is in large part a character study. But in a show about prohibition, her arc also helps to highlight recurring themes about the hypocritical puritanism of the time. Beyond that though, the gender politics of the time are actually an interesting subject in and of themselves, and something that plenty of posters here are clearly oblivious to. I especially liked the posts asking why the religious nurse was so opposed to the word vagina etc, like it was some dumb oversight by the show's writers cos obviously no one would be bothered by the word vagina...

Anyway, Margaret's not my favourite character by any stretch, but complaining about women characters is a dependable trend in OOTV threads, which is why the 'white knight brigade' jump to claims of misogyny.

Different skillsets. Richard is a killer, Owen's muscle, but he's also a facilitator. More likely Eli takes Owen's place imo. (I sure hope they don't pass up the fun of demoting Micky and making him work for Eli).

When Owen finally comes around to the kid, thinking he is agreeing with Nucky, Nucky shoots the boy in the back of the head. Owen's opinion never mattered.
I was sure Nucky would kill him once he offered him a cigarette of his own. What I wasn't sure of is whether that was his plan all along or whether or not he was actually considering letting the kid live.

Re: Boardwalk Empire: Season 3

I enjoyed the episode a lot.

Liked the shot of Owen and Nucky in their nice clothes, especially Nucky's coat, huddled against the corner standing in water. Really nice shot.

I also liked all of the stuff with Capone. Showing his moral code and also the story with the smelly guy was a nice touch. Didn't add much to the story except a little more tension with Deano, but added a lot of character development.

The only part I didn't like was Eli's stuff. Great detective work, drive up to where everyone is meeting and listen in to their conversation "Keep to the shadows!" "Make sure to block the road!" That sure was easy. Really could've been done much better.

I think the main reason people didn't like Gyp is because the writers needed to find a way for him to get at odds with Nucky which is a bit difficult to do. Now that he has his reasoning I think he's a great character. I really liked his discussion about the waitresses at the end of the episode to show how little all of the killing meant to him.

I never thought the kid had a chance.

I think Margaret's storyline is fine. The first episode of this season and the occasional reminders in the background of the girl flying followed by ending the episode with Margaret running out to the beach early in the morning to see her fly overhead really set up this side plot in a great way. Margaret's battle at the hospital is a good way of showing this theme, and realistic. The scenes are very quick and don't hurt the other plots in any way and give a deep look into several interesting themes unique to the time period.

Re: Boardwalk Empire: Season 3

enjoyed michaelson's post, but i dont dislike margaret bc shes a woman. i dislike her bc the character is sucky (it was actually really good in s1, but downhill since) and her stroylines tend to bore the **** out of me.

much like "the newsroom" thread where i said less maggie = better episodes. id have to apply that same rule to bwe. less margaret = better episodes.

eta: just to be clear i thought that episode was really good, but if they used margaret in another way or not at all, they could definitely get better.

I feel that Nucky was going to let the kid live until he came clean about being 19.

I thought Nucky was weighing whether he could trust the kid, ultimately decided he couldn't after the kid laughed about lying to Nucky earlier. But it's hard to say.

On HBO On Demand there was a short segment with the writer/director/whoever afterward who confirmed that it was all about teaching Owen a lesson.

I agree with the person who said that Nubby and Magnet need to be in more scenes together. Having her setting up a womens clinic is fine and i dont really dislike it but i found her character in previous seasons much more compelling.

I think one of the good things about having such a big cast is it keeps you on your toes with regards to who can get got. It wouldnt have surprised me if they had killed Lucky this episode. I wouldnt be surprised if Owen dies this season aswell.

He obviously doesn't know mob history. There was a big discussion last season about if actually knowing the history of these guys were spoilers or not. I couldn't believe that lots of people had no idea who Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky or Arnold Rothstien were

So Eli is gonna kill Mickey this episode, right, or at least get someone to do it for him? Eli gonna be put in charge of the alcohol runs and is gonna find a way to get around the Taber Heights problem.

I usually think the misspelling of names in OOTV is really stupid, but this slayed me for some reason.

I doubt that eli will be the one who kills mickey. He should be dead already for any number of reasons. If he lives its because the writers like to hear him laugh or he runs far away quickly.

they'd have to deviate a lot from history if mickey is getting whacked anytime soon (he's strongly based on someone irl like how nucky is strongly based on enoch johnson)

Sometimes I think that's the way to watch the show and I'm envious, but I also realize that knowing who a lot of these people are is what makes me interested in them too.

C'mon though, you gotta know who Al Capone is.
