Sb is doing a fine job with the role. I like the show a lot. I have not been watching for two seasons in the hope that he tears his shirt off and starts wrestling. I do however think that some of the scenes are not good. The worst has been when sb bashes hans schroeder into the table. Please rewatch that scene.

Like i said, another example of this was sb standing up to cannavale imo. Removing these scenes doesnt change the whole direction of the show. Theres no doubt in my mind that these are good scenes and likely they could have actually occured in nuckys life. But when you choose an actor who is much much much much smaller these scenes need to go. Even then i think the most recent scene could probably say but i havts pressing it imo.

Whether or not size = power irl is completely missing the point. Also the show seems to think that isnt always true imo.

Goodman or Gandolfini would be amazing, but it would change the character a lot. Nucky as written isn't supposed to be physically indimidating.

Re: Boardwalk Empire: Season 3

Part of what I think we're seeing is that initially Nucky wanted to be perceived as badass, but was only 'half a gangster" and didn't pull it off as well.

Now he's done dirt, walks around with a gun, and at least in his own mind believes himself to be intimidating, with mixed results. He wants to be the guy that backs down Rossetti because of who he is, and I assume part of this season is him trying to get to that spot.

Re: Boardwalk Empire: Season 3

I thought it was a pretty good episode and some people are just nitpicking way too much imo. Nucky needs to be bigger? WTF. Also, I can see the Chalky White scene being contived but it has to be, we don't need to see a 3 episode arc of why he wants him as a son in law and why his daughter doesn't want him. People would complain about that, and if it wasn't there people would complain about Chalky's character not being fleshed out.

this is not interesting at all

it doesn't even have to do much with size. actors playing capone or rothstein would have been many times more credible than sb in those and other similar situations

Re: Boardwalk Empire: Season 3

Good start of the season, though my main grip with this show is that some characters are just dragging the story as the writers develop some minor not very interesting sub-plots around them just to keep us aware of their presence while the main story reaches a point where they will step in a bigger role. Also this Rosetti appears to be a fairly stereotyped villain, but hopefully his background will be more interesting than what we have learned from him so far. But this aside this is definitely one of the best shows on air this fall.

i guess part of the gangster fascination is knowing these guys do/did whatever the **** they wanted. but personally ive always been a lot more interested in the meyer lansky, carlo gambino types that lived forever and never did any major prison time. i think theres more to be said about a guy who can get you to stick a gun in someones face than doing it himself. its not very cinematic, but more interesting for sure.

this thread is actually very readable and its somewhat surprising. ive tried reading through other shows threads, but it's really hard to get through the complaining, non-sensical, know-it-all posting.

Either way JFC I wasn't aware that saying one scene brought out some nittery in me about Buscemi's physical appearance would draw out such an awful discussion. I'm sorry.
Bull****.

Buscemi pulled off the hard man fairly well in The Sopranos. I dont think he has grown since then...

Re: Boardwalk Empire: Season 3

Not sure if I should go with "If by 'the hard man', you mean 'the boss's cousin who spends most of his arc trying to go straight', sure," or elaborate that the Tony B stuff was some of my least favorite of the series (although that has more to do with the retconning it took to fit him in there than with anything to do with Buscemi himself).

I loved the Tony B stuff, and thought it was amazing how Steve Buscemi was able to slot into the role without me spending all my time conscious of the big time actor in a tv show.

Obviously he should have put on weight for this role though.

Gyp is really messing this season up for me. He better die a wicked death to make it all worth it. I enjoy a good portion of the rest, but he's making it difficult.

Charlie may not, but she got choked up when Rosetti made the comment along the lines of 'what do you have if you don't have flesh and blood?'
