Bleh.... just awful. Why would you post that? I doubt she's allowed on planes with a sharp object like that elbow.

I find the new girlfriend to be quite breathtaking. At first I liked the Omar plot line but then it hit me how contrived it was. Overall so far I like S3 way more than S2 if just for how much more of a gangster Nucky is

I agree with whoever said the face slashing scene was a little too convieniant. And the new rossetti guy just isnt doing it for me. I think they should have spent a little more time showing him being a badass and gaining respect. From all we've seen, hes just some hot head who for some reason can say anything to anyone and even distrupt a shipment of booze between AR and nucky, two of the most powerful people at the time. I'm sure hes going to get a "satisfying" death and could end up being a good character, but for me hes starting out rough.

Over liking this season so far, I hated Eli all last season but new skeletor-eli is really interesting. Also what was with rossetti spilling the gas on the ground? I get that hes making a point but is he really just gonna stand there and emply the entire tanks out?

Yeah, I'm not sure if I can deal with an endless series of conversations along the lines of
"We need to head north to Boston."
"I think you mean northeast."
"What?"
"We need to go northeast."
"Well Boston's to the north."
"If we just went north we'd never get there. Are you implying I don't know my ****in' geography?!"

By pouring out the gas, he's sending the message that the gas is unimportant to him. It isn't just about the gas. Obviously the next shipment will carry its own gas. Rosetti is saying he'll go to considerable expense to control more than just the gas, and if Nucky wants to get his shipments through to NY without really significant aggravation, he's going to need to do business with Rosetti. By pouring out the gas, but not shooting up the convoy, Rosetti is signalling that he'd rather do business than fight, but he won't tolerate being ignored.

Finally, some quality. Nice post.

Nucky should totally be bigger. They should have cast The Rock or someone instead of Buscemi.

Spoiler:
No they ****ing shouldn't the whole point of his character is that he gets all his power through politicking and his arc is reconciling with needing to get his hand dirty more often. Sometimes I hate the show for spelling out their themes in really amateur ways, but after reading this thread I can empathize with some of the choices Winter and co. make.

I think there are some interesting parallels between Nucky's mistress's flirting and his gladhanding. They are both trying to play the role people expect them to play, but Nucky feels betrayed by his mistress because romantic relationships are more intimate than business ones.

It's weird to me how the rotating serious of back-from-pasts antagonists worked for The Sopranos. That was a show that just executed so well that things like that never bothered me, but if you just described it to me from the 10,000 foot view I'd think was terrible.

Come on, there is a huge difference between John Goodman / James Gandolfini and The Rock. You do realize one of the main reasons people like me have suggested someone like Goodman or Gandolfini is that they're closer in physical stature to the real Nucky Johnson, right? It's not just "We want someone who can beat up people easily!"

I don't mind Buscemi-- despite my misgivings about the casting, he's just such a good performer that it hasn't really affected my enjoyment of the show. But man, I would love to see a show like this with Goodman in the lead role.

I like Buscemi as Nucky and think he pulls it off, but I also think Gandolfini or Goodman would have been great in the role.

Love me some Billie Kent. Don't usually pay that much attention to a smile, but wow.

winter says he didn't give a [censored] about the real nucky johnson. that's part of why his name is nucky thompson. and he's not married to real life. if i were him, i'd want to avoid the inevitable sopranos comparisons as much as possible. and who the hell had heard of nucky johnson before this show?

Me. Probably a lot of us.

I don't really care if the actor is like the real Nucky or not, and I think Buscemi is great but that doesn't mean he's good in every scene. There are still scenes where he falls way short.

Either way JFC I wasn't aware that saying one scene brought out some nittery in me about Buscemi's physical appearance would draw out such an awful discussion. I'm sorry.

I just don't get how you watch SB in this role and then think "Good- but I wish he was bigger and broader". Has Nucky's gangsta not been sufficient so far?

I don't buy for a second that anybody knew enough about the real guy to be bothered by the inaccuracy.

I think the Nucky/Eli fight really benefitted from the size of each actor and that in general the character is much more effective as a slighter guy. The contrast between his actual power and physicality is just way more interesting

Exactly. Kind of like this guy.
Spoiler:

Size has no correlation to power in most cases. Real life fact.
