I don't have the exact lines anymore as I deleted the episode. At the Egyptian party, some guy jokes about imagining a desert with untold treasures within and Nucky says "I already have" or something similar. It was 100% a Vegas reference but it could have just been homage or a throwaway. I recognized it as foreshadowing though.

I'm ok with being wrong on this one so it's all good.

Nucky : "I can imagine it actually ..."

I (naively?) figured he was making a reference to the big box of jewellery that he brought after.
Seriously? They're talking about the discovery of King Tut's Tomb in Egypt. Which, you guessed it - happened in 1922 and was discovered by Howard Carter - the guy in the pith helmet who looked like Teddy Roosevelt in the show. The whole Eqyptian theme of the party was referencing the discovery of the tomb.

o rly ? We are debating what Nucky said ("I can imagine"), not the actual discussion of the discovery. We are discussing what Nucky is making a reference to in his answer.

Of course I realize that the level 1 reference was to Egypt/treasure. I am 100000% sure it was also a Vegas reference. There is no doubt in my mind. Vegas is brought up in a similar way in many other mob shows/movies. I have no way of proving it so if you disagree then that's cool.

If you have no way of proving it then how can you be so sure as well? Vegas is just a ****hole in Nevada at that time. It's not *that* different from other random western cities at the time. The rackets in new York matter infinitely more than a pipe dream of what Vegas would become at that time.

While they aren't complete slaves to history, they certainly haven't stretched it to that extent

There are several reasons that Vegas wouldn't be included. Ignoring that the Flamingo wouldn't open for another 20+ years, the fact the the guy who would be in control of the operation is still a low level enforcer with no reputation(or screen time), the fact that Johnson/Rothstein/Entire Chicago crew had nothing to do with Vegas, the fact that the Commission/great depression/WW2/Cuban operations haven't been mentioned or implied to be on the horizon, and the obvious that this show is about prohibition, which ended 10+ years before Vegas, all point in the opposite direction of Vegas being shown, I'll agree to disagree.

He's saying mum. Common way to refer to woman of the house back then. Especially for English/Irish

I'm completely objective on the matter and season 2 was better than season 1.

yeah, I think so too.

re: Margaret - the show is never quite sure what she is. I recognize that she isn't sure either, but the writers have kind of made her everything to everybody - she's a widow, a mother, a poor person, now a rich person, uncaring, caring, a teetotaler, a bootlegger's wife, religious, atheist, etc. Characters can be fluid, but they seem to go episode to episode with her.

I mean she is all those things though. I guess I just buy her meandering as an authentic response to her situation. She's hurt, confused, hypocritical, guilty, selfish, etc and this is what that looks like. Train wrecks are never the most fun thing to watch- but they can be compelling.

i think u missed that these womenfolk characters need to be kept in their place and not show multiple dimensions of development while their old ugly men drink and whore all night long.

that's what triumph said, that she is indeed all those things (and many more). What an astute viewer should do, is ask why she is those things. Why is she one thing in one instance, and a very different thing in another? Just saying oh she is a woman in the 20's, being all emotional and woman like, is exactly why people don't like her character.

Yeah, I remember that conversation and remember myself thinking: "what are they talking about?"
If they were talking about Vegas - why Nucky could imagine it already?

And about that jewellery box - whats was it all about? Nucky just spent a fortune to impress his guests and show how wealthy he is?

Yea... that's not that surprising though. He likes to be liked since season 1. He's just taking it to another level imo.

This show is so good. I could listen to the characters talking all day. I don't get the Margaret hate. I think she's a pretty strong character. Excited to see what they do with Van Alden.

There's no way he was referencing Vegas, Nucky was obviously making reference to Tatooine and Jabba the Hut's lucrative rackets...

i took it to mean different things on multiple levels:

1. the treasure box at the end of the party
2. all the land that nucky bought to sell to the federal government that margeret bequeathed to the hospital
3. prohibition itself, and the untold millions that nucky has and will make off a dry country.

but don't see it as a reference to vegas.

Seems like a fairly human response to me.

Finally get to watch this live! Here we go...
