I did too.

My rankings for the episodes would be (out of 10):

Tier 1: Entire History of You (10), Be Right Back(9).

Tier 2: Fifteen Million Merits(7), The Waldo Moment(6.5)

Tier 3: The National Anthem(4), White Bear(4)

I thought the pig-screwing and psychological punishment theme park were both segments that I would have rather read a short-story than watched it. I think they work better when you can't visualize the absurdity of them and I think in written word both of those stories could have gone a little more bonkers and been more enjoyable. IMO the pig-screwing episode wasn't effective enough at making a statement about technology or society, it didn't make me think any differently about either. I felt White Bear wasn't even trying to make any point, it was just "wouldn't this be crazy". It did surprise me, however, being shocking doesn't make something good in my opinion.

As a whole though I found Black Mirror to be a cool concept. I'm glad a show like that could be made. I would certainly watch a second installment of segments and I hope more television shows try to take big swings like Black Mirror did.

The cast

Quote:
Jon Hamm (Mad Men, Million Dollar Arm), Rafe Spall (One Day, I Give It A Year) and Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones, The Crimson Field) are confirmed to co-star in the Black Mirror feature-length special due on Channel 4 this Christmas.

The 90-minute seasonal special may well be the most mind-bending episode yet, showcasing three interwoven stories of Yuletide techno-paranoia this December. It will start filming in the UK this week.

Jon Hamm's character appears in all three stories contained within the as yet unnamed episode, binding them together into a suitably unsettling whole.

Well, that will be the best thing I see this Christmas, even if this Christmas I see Justin Bieber get punched in the face, fall down a flight of stairs and land in a padding pool filled with thumb tacks and razor blades.

Liked the 15 million ep the most. BRB, White Bear and Entire History were solid.

Waldo was basically 50 minutes of angst-filled Youtube comments. Meh.

National Anthem episode was garbage. Very, very British garbage.

I thought 2+3 were both A+

I'm repeating myself from the SE OOTV thread, but I love how episode 2 throws you into a completely different reality with no hand holding. It felt like a psychedelic roller coaster ride.

Watched 15 million merits and entire history last night. Loved 15 merits. Its a concept I've actually given a lot of thought to.

History of you was only slightly worse to me. Loved them both and will watch the rest tonight

Thought White Bear was a million times better than the Waldo episode and the first episode. Am surprised its close. Guess it's just different tastes for these sci-fi series.

This show needs to steer away from the whole "technology is evil" type thing.

The merits and white bear episodes really aren't trying to hammer in that point, but the whole surrounding is just a anti-technology setting. The others are almost blatant in it.

I guess the only episode that wasn't was about a guy having sex with a pig...

Bearz, the choice of content and tone makes more sense if you know the work of Charlie Brooker. Everything in it is about his personal cynicism about the future of society and the direction that we are going is very tech based.

Also White Bear and Waldo Moment weren't really about technology.

Hrm I see.

I knew nothing about him but the anti-tech stance was clear, and it's fine if that's his message, but just wanted to note it for discussion.

The funny thing is he isn't anti tech, he is a massive gamer and loves gadgets, but the future of society is technological and as a societal satirist it's impossible to avoid this overlap and the high possibility of things getting worse. Even the tech heavy episodes aren't about tech itself being bad instead they are just the catalysts of the show, fifteen million merits (based in a beautifully shot uber futuristic environment) is about celebrity culture, reality & competition TV and the strive that being famous is a worthy goal in itself.

Btw for all the hate it gets as being subpar The Waldo Moment is the most important if least well executed episodes as it a commentary on how people turning away from democracy leads us down a very dark path as an elite literally control the world - but also that the political elites led by their own goals are forcing the situation as no one has any faith in the politicians anymore, making them equally culpable. If Brooker did a Political Wipe show he would absolutely ravage both the politicians and the voters to such a crazy degree.
