This is crazy talk, Striking Vipers was the only episode that was at the level of a not-very-good episode from prior episodes(visually interesting in the tiny amount of the episode that happened in the game, well acted, Black Mirror style premise about tech and relationships).

Smithereens would be a bad episode of whatever the British NCIS is. Just a played straight hostage story with no hook or interesting characters. Even if the Miley episode had been a San Junipero level classic this would still be by far the worst season.

Season 4's bottom three was Crocodile, Arkangel, and Metalhead. All of those were better than every episode this season.

The pitch for the episode was "fellas, is it gay to pick a female character in a video game?" and the answer was "Yeah, wait, nevermind no"

yeah this. I didn't hate Striking Vipers and it was at least attempting an underlying message. It explores monogamy, sexual identity and escapism in the virtual world and makes the (clumsy) point that outwardly happy people are conducting secret alternate lives online. In classic Black Mirror fashion it takes that point to an extreme and hammers it, and there's definitely a failure to come to a satisfactory conclusion but I could at least identify a Black Mirror theme to it.

The other two were just meh. As Fly has said, they'd make mediocre episodes of an everyday procedural drama series.

The premise of Striking Vipers was good, the conclusion was poorly done. They could've gone many other directions. Pedophile one mentioned in thread would've been way more of a black mirror style ending. Instead they decided to go the happy ending (no pun intended) route, which is atypical of most eps.

Also I've only seen the first two episodes and also really not getting the hate... this is like a billion times better than season 4 already (albeit not on the same level as the first 3 seasons and xmas special).

Have people forgotten season 4 literally had an entire episode where a woman was chased by a puppy dog thing because she wanted to steal a teddy bear, an episode which was pretty much just a reboot of previous episodes set to a star trek theme, and an episode where a chick hugs someone to death then goes on a killing spree (ok that one was hilarious but still)?

S4 being bad doesnt change S5 being bad.

The more I think about Smithereens the less I like it. Just so many ridiculously badly written characters.

Thing I like least about it is all technology in the episode is real world 2019 stuff.

I guess they made the "Rachel,Jack,Ashley Too" episode to reach the teen girl demographic audience, not the usual Black Mirror audience, and probably Miley Cyrus's business team had some ideas and restrictions on what they could do. Kind of a mess.

I need to re-watch a lot of these, some I've shuffled since last time just due to how I feel about them now, but here's a quick crack at a list... I will say that the gap between White Bear and Arkangel is absolutely massive.

I'm really struggling to compare RJAT & Metalhead. I can say without question if the teddy bear scene wasn't at the end of Metalhead it would be a very easy decision, but I mean...

Also I think Smithereens is one of those shows/movies where the acting is so good, and the pacing so perfect, and the settings so slick, that it's an enjoyable watch. It's not until afterwards when you actually think about it that you realise how ****ing stupid the entire thing is.
