I'm sure we've all seen shows and movies that would be improved by tighter editing and plotting, although obviously you can't really tell two episodes in.
Exactly. Quantity does not equal quality. I think most of US TV shows would be so much better if they were tighter. Too often they are either "problem of the week" (House, Flash, Arrow...) or have a lot of filler episodes (Walking Dead, Agents of the Shield...).

I very well understand why things are this way (to get max the value), but I really hope things change in coming years. There just are way more things to watch than people have free time.

(Great example of leaner vs wider is Sherlock vs Elementary or the atrocious Hobbit movies. I really recommend checking out the fan edit btw)

As for Billions, I just don't see how season 1 can stay good this long without starting to include a lot of outside characters and plot elements that don't matter in the big picture. I'm very certain we are not reaching any closure at the end of this season anyways.

So is it possible we are being set up to find out at some point that Axe somehow heard through his channels that he shouldn't be in the towers on 911? Or would that just be ******ed ?

I know it sounds ridiculous and ******ed . I'm just curious whether anyone else felt like that speech scene in E1 was built like a setup to a twist like that, and whether anyone thought whether it has any chance of being a potential twist. I'm guessing the answer to both is no fwiw .

Obviously he was on some nefarious business to not be in the building. (schtooping the AG's wife or meeting with inside source)

I got a little of that vibe, that something fishy is going on there.

There was definitely something going on. The extend of which, we'll have to see, but I'm sure there is something we'll find out about the whole 911 attack.

I'll be legit angry if the reason he wasn't in the building was because HE KNEW IT WAS COMING *dun dun dun*

And short sold the airlines and made his fortune.

I agree that if he legit knew that there were airplanes about to fly in the towers that it would be ridiculous. But the whole scene felt like it would be revealed at some point that it wasn't a coincidence that he was not in the building. It could be something like "Axe heard through a backchannel that stock markets were going to take a major hit at some point during the week of 09/10 and 09/14 and that NYC (or even "large cities") was (were) going to be a dangerous place".

It doesn't make him look like the ******* that let 911 happen but does make him look like the ******* that let his friends die and probably made money off of it too.

Thinking about it it would seem odd that absolutely NOBODY would have tried to take advantage of some sort of inside knowledge on 911 to become rich? Has something like that ever been suspected or something? Maybe I'm overestimating on how big the inside circle was .

This has been debated a lot. There were obviously a lot of puts on AA and United. I don't think it was conclusively proven that the bad guys were behind them. A lot of truthers tried to say that though.

is this a legitimately good drama or is it just a good show by network tv standards? (i know it's not a network station)

i like the subject matter but i'm gonna give it another 3-4 episodes before i make a decision on whether to start watching as it seems like there's still a bit of uncertainty.

I'm on the same boat. Initially I was disappointed because I maybe expected too much and was excited about the subject, but now that it clearly feels like just a OK-ish network show I don't mind. Don't expect much from it but will keep watching as not much else is on.

I'm going to stick with it though I don't really love it. I'm not sure where the show goes beyond the DA vs. Brody battle. Damian Lewis really saves the show.

The show also seems overly-cliche'd and slightly ridiculous. Of course the DA likes golden showers, the PI prefers midget dominatrixes, and the guy inside the firm cheating most is a low-rent version of Vin Diesel in Boiler Room. It can be an effective drama (possibly more) without these types of sub-plots.

I've seen BoB 3 times all the way thru! One of the few shows around these days unashamed to be genuinely patriotic. Young men like that literally saved civilization, from all the Allied countries obv.

And I'm a Spurs fan, that's about it.

Meh. Writing is super, super horrible (I mean, dog **** and stuff, come on ...). Hate Chuck Rhoades, don´t give a **** about Bobby Axelrod, so I guess I´m pretty much done with the show?
