I read it as Slippin' Jimmy being bigly self-satisfied that he pulled off yet another con, only this time with bonus results (Howard blaming himself) which appears to be confirmed with the "cross to bear" comment. Nothing Howard told him really changed anything.
I mean, if he was guilt-ridden that his antics at the bar hearing sent Chuck over the edge, why would he feel better about the fact that, no, it was
actually his antics at the insurance office which sent Chuck over the edge? Either way the outcome is the same (only in the latter case, Howard gets burdened with it).
Maybe Vince can clarify but that's where I am aorn.
