Here's my take.
The whole shakeout of the Chuck situation throws him completely off. He's been helping Chuck, trying to live up to what he thinks will impress Chuck, now he's been slapped in the face.
he is adrift. He doesn't know what to do, but since he's been committed to "doing the right thing" for so long, he goes back to the senior bingo game, but has the meltdown.
He then returns to Cicero to, Idk, clear his head, tie up loose ends. But in the end, the old Slippin' Jimmy life doesn't cut it for him long term despite how easily he slips back into it.
He gets that call outside the funeral and returns to ABQ.
So here's what my guess is - as he's walking in to go to the meeting he has a moment of clarity. He realizes no matter what he does, Chuck will NEVER accept or respect him as an equal and neither will the lawyers at the hot shot law firm in Santa Fe. He'll always be "not a real lawyer" from an online law school.
That tips the scales and he decides not to take the offer, not to go back to Cicero, but to take the third path of being himself, and practicing law HIS WAY.
