Better Call Saul - Season 1 Better Call Saul - Season 1

Gus had plenty of backstory in BB, so it's really not necessary to re-visit him except as a fun character building his empire occasionally.

Saul was essentially a caricature, which is a big reason why BCS is so good.

Can someone remind me just how close/not close Gus and Saul are in BB? My memory serves me that Saul and Gus were a couple of people removed from each other..

Edit: my point being that I'm not sure there'd be any logical reasoning for him to feature in BCS

Saul mentions to Walt that he might know a friend of a friend (assuming its mike) who might be interested in buying his meth. That's pretty much the only connection they make between both of them that I can remember.

I thought for sure this was going to be a comedy. I'm glad it's not, as this is much better. This has insane potential IMO.

Didn't mike work for Gus?

Yes, but the show's not called Better Call Mike. Remains to be seen how prominent Mike will be - which would determine how likely Gus is to feature.

Right, I'm assuming Mikes gonna be important enough to get Gus back. Plus Gus is awesome.

It's hard for viewers of BB to divorce the ideas of the show, but I also don't think BCS is overtly appealing to people who have close to zero familiarity with the BB universe.

I do think people who are aware of the BB universe, but didn't like the show because of the wholly unlikable set of characters have a very good chance of liking BCS. So, for people who liked some elements of BB, or at least were familiar with some of the first season, BCS might work as a better show for them. To me, it has a lot more nuance already than BB did, and it's nice seeing "bad" guys have some nuance, before we know what they became.
To clarify my point. I'm glad I watched BrBa. Definitely get much more out of BCS because of that. My point was, I would be interested in hearing what someone who didn't watch BrBa thinks of BCS.

So, yes, I was selfishly manipulating the person who said he never watched BrBa

He becomes Saul's main guy right? He should be in the show quite a bit I would think.

I almost think that Gus HAS to come into play at some point, given that it was heavily insinuated in BB that Gus, Mike, and Saul already had an extensive relationship.

grunching:

the show has been much more BrBa heavy than I was anticipating. Mike, Tuco, some of the same locations (I guess that part wasn't a shocker). for ratings sake I think developing this into a BrBa prequel series has gotta be optimal, and if the show runs long enough is almost needs to become that. rather than a "monster of the week" Saul series.

at the least it seems there will be some decent BrBa world building which is really cool to see and I wasn't really ancticipating

Pretty much this is how I feel about it too. Really happy about the two seasons to come, I'll be looking forward to every Monday night to come. The same way I used to look forward to Sunday nights.

So happy about this.

I think Saul said he knows somebody (Mike Ehrmantraut) who knows somebody (Victor) who knows somebody (Gustavo Fring).

Saul had no direct information about Gus.

Do we have reason to believe that Saul would tell Walt the truth in that situation? Saul has been known to take liberties with veracity from time to time.

Am I alone in disliking Gus? He was set up as this super careful guy and then a couple of episodes later he is mediating in person with a couple of low level street dealers.

I think when the only two people capable of creating the product in a several hundred million (billion?) dollar empire are having a problem with said low level street dealers you might get involved.

Thanks to Dom for the Network and ATJ links. I've really gotta rewatch the first, and check out the second (all I've seen from that was the "Bye Bye Life" finale, which was amazing).

I assumed the firm was waiting/stalling out his death.
I assumed that any company would be reluctant to just hand over $11M, whether or not anyone's death were imminent.

OK, fine, I'll do it. Here's a short one to illustrate, only 30 secs, and you can skip the first 20. No graphic injuries in this one.

Or you can search YT for "static gas station fire" and watch people actually burn up.

More entertaining character: Saul from BrBa, or Ari from Entourage?

Ari. How could that even be debatable?

While we know that Jimmy/Saul survives, we also kinda know that this Chuck guy dies at some point given he wasn't mentioned in BB at all.

Gonna be interesting to see how that happens.

Sure Saul survives prequel part, but nothing is stopping the show from jumping back to past BB events at the end.
