The Americans Season 5 The Americans Season 5

Elizabeth clearly loves her life and is excited about Paige potentially joining.

Phillips realization of what kimmies dads new job means for him should get Mathew Rhys an Emmy.

Have decided to embrace and enjoy the slow burn this season. Fully expect it go full insane next year. Stans gf has got to a Russian??

Oh and pastor Tim must die. Cmon Paige.

this should have been the last season imo

it really went nowhere compared to past seasons, pretty disappointing

It was part set-up for what's to come, but mostly trying to tell us the internal thought story of several characters to reinforce the notion that most (but not all:Elizabeth) are weary of this Cold War game. Of being phony. Of being used for such degrading purpose with lip service to some idealistic and nationalistic purpose.

I get it. We want to be entertained and wowed. I fully expect there to be huge payoffs in the next season. This year was mood and interlude (ok I'll say it-foreplay).

Don't expect Homeland-style action from this show. If you do you are bound to be disappointed. I thought this season was quite good.

Stan's definitely suspicious of his lady after she protested his changing departments.

When Elizabeth was looking around the room and at her clothes, was she thinking how she'd miss their American way of life? Including the dishwasher (the ridiculous symbol of American excess)? If so, she used Phillips revelation about Kimmie's dad's tape as an excuse to herself and him that they needed to stay.

That was my take on the situation. If not her entire motivation for staying, it was at least a significant part of it.

I think there's a couple of things. Clearly she's thinking a lot about the effect on the kids of suddenly moving back home. And yes, they're definitely signalling that she would miss living in USA #1 (which is doubly interesting because in season 1 it was the other way around, Philip was thinking about defecting so he could just live the american dream and drive his RV to arizona and Elizabeth thought he was soft and weak). And of course, she just likes the job more than Philip and she probably doesn't have any idea what she'd do back home.

FWIW, they have to send Henry to that boarding school next season. There's no way the writers introduce that plot element without acting on it. He'll probably end up rooming with a guy like Robert Mueller just to put a bow on it.

I just can't see them going back to Russia with the kids. To me the question is if they can just go silent and be their cover without their past catching up to them. Or if something like defection is in the cards.

I did like this season. Least favorite part was Tuan and the defector family. Paige part was fine. Fbi, Oleg, Stan, Philip and Elizabeth were solid.

Obv, this would totally blow up the premise of the show.

I mean, it's possible that they end the series with that but given the emotional drama of the kids that would be a world-class cocktease.

I think what we're heading for is Oleg defecting, which probably means Martha getting shipped back to USA, exposing the Jennings.

Does Stan kill Phillip or the other way around?

I doubt Stan suspects his GF is a spy.

The problem with Oleg defecting is the price his Mother and Father would pay. I can't see Oleg doing that to them.

Oleg is obviously becoming more disallusioned with USSR, but I can't see him defecting either. I can see him getting arrested, maybe executed, especially if he gives himself up to spare his family. Or maybe he's forced to do something horrible as a KGB officer which breaks him.

Why would Oleg defecting mean that Martha returns to the USA?

They built up Stan's intuition as his superpower in the first few seasons, and he did not look happy when his girlfriend told him to stay in that department. Could just be that he's wary of his job ruining this relationship just like his marriage, but I'd bet on him being suspicious of her.

But the story has to tie back to the US somehow. It doesn't make sense to spit oleg into his own narrative that never comes back to the main storyline. That's a spin-off.

Because there's gotta be a reason Martha is still an active character and nothing else makes sense. They've brought them close to colliding already (in the grocery store), they're clearly going to run into each other and Oleg is going to figure stuff out. And he's going to want to bring something valuable with him to make sure he gets a good deal in USA #1.

yeah this is a good catch, it could be either but I think you're on to something.

I think he does. Remember in season one when he was suspicious of Phillip but his then-wife got him to forget about it by calling him paranoid? I think he is definitely shrewd and jaded enough to consider that possibility.

If Martha adopts that little girl it would complicate things.

Stan has been clueless when it comes to the Russians - since season 1 anyways. Also he is clueless about women. Him being the one that finds out about her being Russian (which I strongly guess is the case) would be a huge upset.

I think Philip finds out about her being Russian, tells Stan (he knows how WOAT this would be for their kids and Philip is a human who wants to prevent this), this causes a rift in the family, and Elizabeth dies in the aftermath (somehow). Philip defects to the USA through Stan, Henry goes to boarding school, and Paige remains angsty.

I definitely don't see them going back to Russia and don't see the series climaxing with them continuing as Russian spies. my guess is they stay in America, but likely not as a couple. Elizabeth is more of a true believer in the cause, she'll miss America but would never defect. she'll die for her country.

My predictions:
-Paige realizes that her parents are doing very nasty things as spies when Elizabeth takes her on a mission that goes south.
-Phillip investigates whether Stan's girlfriend is a spy. He steps over the line somewhere, spooks her, they end up fighting and he kills her.
-The Centre threatens to kill Mischa in order to gain leverage over Phillip.
-Kimmy's dad meets Phillip.
-Tuan betrays Phillip to the Centre.

+1. Mrs. T and I were having a bit of a prediction contest on it. It surprised me that they skipped a couple of years, but I thought the opening ep was solid.

I think someone is going to eat the cyanide tablet (perhaps unknowingly) before the end of the season, and I don't think it is going to be Elizabeth.
