I have a friend who is a pretty good singer(imo). She auditioned a year ago. Said that the first judges listened to her for ~5 seconds and said she just wasn't special enough and sent her home....so yeah I'm sure its ridiculously hard to even get to the real judges(and I think theres more than 1 audition you go through before the real judges too).

why is that a bad thing(for making money and selling records)?

Seriously, a generic rock voice is exactly what they want. For as much as the judges go on and on about creativity and making a song their own, AI winners have little input once the contest is over - others write the songs and they go on stage and perform them.

AI will hire a bunch of rock song writers and put Lee and his acoustic front and center on stage with a bunch of professional musicians. And it will likely sell (for a while).

The only thing AI really has to lose is the requirement that they need to record the "winning song" as the first release (unless they have already). Nothing like a rocker coming out of the gates with a song titled something like "This Is My Night (Forever Remember)".

BEP continue to put on some of the WORST live performances ever.

Joss Stone was really cool and I sort of liked the Zepplin Cover, but Mary's voice doesn't carry the song well in the second half.

I saw them at an industry party maybe 13 years ago, pre-Fergie. I had never heard of them at the time, and to be honest I was really impressed.

When they brought in Fergie, they turned into some generic, ultra-sh*tty group that I think epitomizes everything that is wrong with music.
