FWIW, I never liked David Cook's vocals (neither David A.). Not my cup of tea. Not because they're not good, I would just not listen to anything by him voluntarily, since I'm not into that raspy ballad rock sound. I like the soul, RnB singers more.

So it's a whole slew of things that determine the voting (not who actually has success after the show), not necessarily in order as for some factors might outweigh the others.

1) Technical (how good are you at singing?)
2) Looks (can you be on TV?)
3) Musical Style (can your genre get people to vote?)
4) Backstory (do you need money? do you have a creepy message?)

Likeability/personality plays a huge part, maybe not in winning outright, but definitely in getting from the top 24 down to the top 7-8.

TMZ is reporting that Bowersox almost walked off the show two weeks ago. Interesting story. I'll post a link soon.

a few weeks ago ppl were loling at me because I compared what the Idol contestants are going through to the bond that develops in an infantry unit.

this is from Band of Brothers, the book, by Stephen Ambrose, one of the most well liked history writers of our time.

"The result of these shared experiences was a closeness unknown to all outsiders. Comrades are closer than friends, closer than brothers. Their relationship is different from that of lovers. Their trust in, and knowledge of, each other is total. They got to know each other's life stories, what they did before they came into the Army, where and why they volunteered, what they liked to eat and drink, what their capabilities were. On a night march they would hear a cough and know who it was; on a night maneuver they would see someone sneaking through the woods and know who it was from his silhouette."

Yeah, I'm way off.

It's a lot different because, ya know, they're not risking their lives together.

i'm talking about the basic training part of it. I never said "in the field dying together"

they are going through something most people will never go through, and there is a bond that is formed, like the one Ambrose describes. This is why they all cry like babies when ppl go home, when we at home are like, wtf are you crying for, they didn't die.

also, you guys are taking this way to literally, i'm making an analogy, not an exact description

This is where you're wrong. A lot of people go through bonding experiences like this... this one just happens to be on TV.

yeah, lots of people go through a competition ON TV in front of 30 million viewers where the winner gets a record contract and their life is changed forever.

i just completely disagree with your assumption that ppl go through things like Idol all the time.

give me a list of 3 things that you think are comparable to what they go through in idol

You are comparing Idol to an infantry group in war together. He is comparing it to high school baseball or a fraternity or whatever.

When you compare stretches, they don't seem that far off.

Anyways how did this get brought up again? I have a feeling you rehashed it in light of the Bowersox story, I just can't for the life of me figure out why.

because i'm reading Band of Brothers and i saw that passage and it's exactly what I was referring to. They are sharing something that no one else can imagine, and it makes them closer than brothers. I'm not talking about the actual dying in war, I'm talking about going through everything together as a unit.

Out of billions of people in the world, there have been less than 250 idol contestants on the live stage, I'd say that's a pretty elite group.

Hip, just give it up man. Being on a ****ing tv show is in no way comparable to going to war. Do you have any family members that were in a war? Say that to them, see what happens.
