American Idol - 2014 American Idol - 2014

So they're through the auditions and into the preliminaries and, while I may be getting fooled, it looks like this is by far the most talented bunch of singers for the show in years.

It started off great, with the auditions showing mostly good singers and only a few terrible ones.

Jillian Jensen of X-Factor fame is trying her hand at Idol and has made it through to the group round.

This is also the best group of judges the show has ever had. Keith, JLo, and Harry are a perfect mix.

Really looking forward to the this season.

idol has been my guilty pleasure forever and season 13 is killing it so far. harry connick jr is hilarious--i lol'ed hard irl when he cradled that contestant in his arms a couple weeks ago.

here's a clip. kid auditioning says he's a huge fan of connick's; harry says if he nails the audition he can sing while harry holds him in his arms; kid nails audition; harry picks him up; then the best part, kid breaks out into alicia keys: "i just want you close...where you can stay forever..."

Been burned out the singing shows, but nothing else was on last night so I watched the first episode of Hollywood week. I was very impressed. I was surprised at the number of people playing instruments, which I really like. I agree that this seems to be the most talented group in years.

While I agree that the average level seems to be pretty high with this group, I don't think there's a lot of true superstars in the bunch. At least, not that I can see yet.

But I'm still liking this season. Harry Connick Jr. is brilliant - I love him on this show, more than any other judge in a singing show ever.

I'm excited for the group performances - the group stage is always my favorite stage in the competition.

So far, I think curly-headed Briana is a favorite to go far. What a voice.

HCJ is a total stud. Hilarious, critical, keeps it real - such a welcome change from the usual suck ups.

Thought this was pretty sweet:

Echo what is said above. Harry Connick Jr. is a great addition as a judge, and the panel as a whole seems pretty good this year (even JLo!). Compared to the last few seasons (9-12) it almost feel like a new show!

Kenzie Hall, who was posted above me, has been terrific in what we've seen of her so far, but it is a bit too early to say who really stands out. After next week when everyone's had their chance to do another solo it will probably be even more clear.

Man, there are some great singers this season. I can't wait to see how they fare during the live shows. I'm seriously blown away so far.

I agree. It's been a long time since I've been excited about watching a singing competition, but this season has me hooked. They seem to be picking different types of singers this year as well. The gospel singers, the pretty white people, and the Enrique copycats are not getting through as much this year. There seems to be a lot of musicians and a lot of focus on voices that are unique. HCJ mentioned that they are looking for that one thing that you can't describe in a singer, and it seems like they are finding it. It's that voice that has feeling to it.

Just wanted to say how great and refreshing Harry Connick is as a judge. My god that cat burgular thing he did last night had me rolling.

Yeah, when Randy Jackson showed up to say hi it made me realize just how bad of a judge he was. It was like, "gtfo Randy, you suck."

I agree with most of the praise of this season -- was pretty ready to give up on the show after last year but have been hooked back in by the quality of the contestants + improved judging panel. I felt like some of the contestants they were justifiably saying no to yesterday were better than finalists from last season.

Some of the people they had to cut blew my mind.

Nikki McKibbin's son is a nice story but man was his last performance bad. Off key for most of the song.

Best I've heard is the younger guy who did Lego House in his audition. He is excellent and should be really popular.

Agree with everyone on the improved quality of contestants this year. Letting them play instruments and perform originals ever since the beginning has helped, with more singer songwriter artists and fewer copycat voices. HCJ over Randy also helps, to select better artists.

X Factor's cancellation should also help AI in the future.

My favorite is the braces-wearing tuba player girl. She's adorable.

It was looking that way but the girls tonight were really bad. Singing was bad and song choices were bad. I don't disagree that this year looked promising, but I think these 10 girls are actually weak compared to other seasons. I can think of four from last year who were better then the best I have seen tonight, but it is early.

wtf? weren't the top 30 all supposed to get a chance to "sing for our votes"? i thought that was bs, cutting 1/3rd of the finalists w/o even letting us hear them sing. nobody likes a bait-n-switch.

Well that sucked. So much blah from so much promise.

How the **** do they cut Kenzie?! I'm just gonna assume it's a stunt for outrage, and that she'll be a wild card. Not really counting on it though, because the executive production choices were horrible tonight. Even Nigel was better than this.

stupid to cut there. talk a little less and let all 15 sing. maybe i'm just disappointed that they cut kenzie.

Got in late, and got myself up-to-date quickly, as this season seems to be really good. HCJ has been great - hilarious guy, and a good judge. Love that there have been a lot more artist types rather than pop/powerhouse singers this year.

A bit disappointed with the latest episode. Would honestly have given all the 5 girls that were cut the chance to sing instead of some of the terrible picks they made today. Feel like the competition got significantly weaker and less interesting on the girls side. Hopefully the few that are good will advance on at least.

its 2014 they had to keep all the mediocre black girls and dump all the good white girls with guitars.

Yeah, I was a bit surprised with some of the cuts.

As for the girls who sang: I liked the first girl, Jessica, and Malaya (sp? - the last girl)

But it was a disappointing night. I can understand the girls being a bit nervous and freaked out - it's a huge night, singing in front of a live studio audience and millions of people on TV.

Not sure sure why they kept MK, beyond her story.
