American Crime Story - The Assassination of Gianni Versace American Crime Story - The Assassination of Gianni Versace

Starts this Wednesday!

S1 focusing on Uncle Juice was one of the best shows of last year and came 4th in the OOTV end of year poll. If you haven't seen it, go watch it - it's on Netflix and the thread is here.

The follow up season was supposed to be about Hurricane Katrina, but that has been put back to S3. They're also already announced that S4 will be about the Monica Lewinsky scandal, which I'm pretty pumped for.

Anyway, that leaves us with S2 which looks at the 1997 murder of Gianni Versace. The cast includes Penelope Cruz and, uh, Ricky Martin.

O.J. was always going to be a tough act to follow, and the reviews, whilst pretty good, aren't as great as last year:

Regardless, I think i'm IN for the season, which is only 9 eps.

Very confused - my TiVo for Wednesday the 17th shows the episode as S2E2. It's the premiere, right, and TiVo is just glitched?

I'm confused...those 1990 scenes with Cunanan and Versace meeting and hanging out...was that Cunanan's lie?? They never met in real life.

Is anyone watching this? I was planning to watch the first episode the night of and then forgot about it. Surprised it's not getting more attention given how much love OJ got.

I've only seen E1, but I liked it. Good performances, music, and pacing. What I also like is I don't remember all the details, unlike always knowing what was going to happen in the OJ one.

The acting was pretty solid too, although Cruz was a bit over the top as Donatella. Ricky Martin was surprisingly decent.

I'm probably in for the whole season and have semi-high hopes.

One thing that this is making clear is that Andrew Cunanan (or the actor playing him) was a dreadful bore.

Would've been more interested in the Versace story from the beginning.

Saw E2, and IMO the show is delivering. It's not the acting tour de force and story we all remember that the OJ season was, but it's very watchable and I'm looking forward to more.

Darren Criss (Andrew Cunanan) kinda looks like a younger Mark Paul Gosselaar (Zack Morris from Saved by the Bell). Ended up finding out that both of them are half-Asian.

This show is oddly titled considering how little of it is actually about Gianni Versace, though that's fine because the stuff about his life that they've tried to shoehorn in has been completely irrelevant and uninteresting anyway. Otherwise I'm enjoying it, though I assume there's a considerable amount of artistic license being taken with all these scenes portraying events with no surviving witnesses (i.e. pretty much all of the last few episodes).

From what I've heard/read, very little details are known aside from who died and that Andrew killed them. And a lot of what appears to be true is still speculation in the show. Its been an interesting watch, but I'm not yet convinced it needed to made.

I still think the show is well shot, scored and acted, but has a pacing issue. For starters the last two episodes could've been condensed to just one, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Yes - I get that they wanted to fold in don't ask don't tell aspects, and there's nothing wrong with that, but the road trip with Andrew and the young man he eventually killed dragged on endlessly.

How are ratings?

my only gripe with this season is that darren criss is distractingly good looking while the real andrew cunanan looked like a ****ing dweeb. i know it's not unusual to cast better looking actors for real people roles but still

Yea, I have watched some recent documentaries of the Golden State Killer and he was way too smart, if he is still alive he won't be caught.

The dude had balls of steel to do some of the **** he did and be so unafraid to confront the men in the houses.

Did you see the story about how the guy who stood up at a town hall meeting berating the other men for allowing an attack to occur and then that guy gets attacked? I'd like to hear how that guy is doing now, that had to **** him up good.

The season was pretty good overall but kind of felt cheap considering how little of the scene's content were true/factual. Andrew's dad and the actor who played him were amazing and saved the 2nd half for me.

I think if this had been Season 1 it would have stood out more/better. But between OJ being still fresh on everyone's minds and knowing that future seasons will cover Katrina and Bill/Monica, this felt like a step down for some. I thought it was solid, but the 9 episodes ran something like 13 hours with commercials and I feel like it could've been condensed to six 90 minute episodes instead.

For those interested, newsweek once again did a "fact vs. fiction" for each episode like the did with OJ. Interesting reads. Here's the one for the finale; there are links to the previous episodes at the bottom:

Anyone else notice the resemblance to the show's Versace and the actor from Just Shoot Me?
