I ridicule anyone who doesn't agree with this take.

Yellowstone in 20 years will be nothing. 1883 in 20 years will still be something one must watch if they love the genre.

I was shocked Faith H and Tim M could act. I mean SHOCKED. Emmy's?

is it ok to watch 1883 and not yellowstone?

also: i generally don't like westerns. should i even bother?

come to think of it, i still haven't watched deadwood, so should probably just watch that instead.

ya aside from a few references only the family name connects the 2 shows, there is over a century between the shows.
Started yellowstone recently, its a very poor mans succession imho.
1883 is easier to get into compared to deadwood and has a couple great guestappearances so id start with that if i were you. If its not gritty enough for you make the switch

Yeti, yeah, 1883 is really good, but not as good as Deadwood

Deadwood is elite. 1883 is a notch below that. Both are great and better than just about anything you could be watching right now.

imo 1883 isn't remotely close to deadwood and if you don't like the western genre don't see how you would like 1883 while you could still def like deadwood.

I don't like westerns but I liked 1883, but agree Deadwood is much more than a western.

Goddamn this show.... I’m only 7 episodes deep but it is freaking fantastic!! Just beautifully brutal and vicious. I thought the daughter being as stunning as she is would be a distraction but that went away quickly!

And Deadwood is GOAT. It’s not even debatable lol

Man, what a show....

I figured I’d watch an episode every other day or so but after episode 2, I went all in!! One of the better TV experiences I’ve had in awhile!!

It took a few episodes and then I was totally invested. Just finished Episode 9 and felt a little breathless by the end.

This show is wonderful, unexpected, gift.

Just watched Run Hide Fight. I can see why they selected Isabel May for 1883. Great actress. I've not watched anything else she is in.

As for Deadwood, I used to fall asleep during episodes when it originally aired. It was ok, but overall just too slow for me, but perhaps I'll give it another go some day.

Run Hide fight was great

Just finished the 2nd episode...this is a world-class production. So well made. Ten times better than the soap opera that is Yellowstone.

It's almost like a Western art film.

"Who do I have left to live for, James? I have had 7 children. And they have all ended up just like this one. In the dirt I kneel beside. I am done kneeling. I'm ready to lie down."

Damn.

Going to give this a fourth chance. Still hesitant. Deadwood is top 5 all time in my book so fingers crossed.

I get that. I have low expectations. I stuck with Downton Abbey after realizing it was just a soap opera. Same with Handmaid's Tale for a bit before bailing.

I’m just hoping that all of the slacking they’ve been doing on Yellowstone is made up for in this. Cause that show went to complete ****

Agreed, I think the potential upside with this show is promising. Interesting casting decisions, didn't expect 2 all time greats to feature but I'm happy with the direction nonetheless.

I only managed a few episodes of Yellowstone before giving up.

3 episodes into 1923 , not as gripping as 1883, its still worth the watch and i hope it finishing with a bang.

Spoiler:
i like the africa parts the most.
Helen Mirren is a great actress but her irish accent is on par with Tom Cruise/.Nicole Kidman in far and away and its kinda ruining the episodes for me, i never understand why big shows do this, just hire a decent irish actress imo

Didn't care for Yellowstone.

Kinda randomly decided to start 1883 yesterday because it was one of the spotlighted entertainment items on a 11 hour flight. Ended up watching 5 episodes. Looks like I have to sign up again for Paramount+? For some reason I accidentally bought another year of Peacock instead of Paramount+ on a Black Friday deal.

Agree with all above points - Mirren kinda screwing the pooch here with that accent, not sure this qualifies as a spoiler though. :]

Africa hunter Dutton dude is growing on me.
