PLO boom still to come according to JNandez

He said he's very confident PLO boom still hasn't happened in the introduction to the free PLO mini course on upswing poker. He was clearly exaggerating, but I was hoping to get some insight from PLO pros to what extent, if any, it's true that PLO is alive and well.
I believe he also said 10bb/100 win rates are achievable at HS and this just seems like it can't be right. Can anyone shed light on the subject?
Mods please move if wrong forum.

Re: PLO boom still to come according to JNandez

PLO boom still very possible but it would take a number of different things to happen.

High stakes games existing again for people to watch
More information/strategy available to new players
A bunch of other small-big things.....

10bb/100 depending on the site or venue and player

I think that if PLO was able to capture the NL players who weren't interested in playing 2 card anymore easier, it could be possible. Right now, I think that it is too difficult for many players to learn PLO. The amount of strategy and discussion that exists for NL makes it fairly easy to get an understanding of and feel comfortable playing.

Re: PLO boom still to come according to JNandez

In terms of PLO online, there's practically zero chance of a PLO boom. Country after country are banning online poker while some others are segregating their player base. The government has basically ****ed up a can't miss product and offered nothing in it's place. Unless you are an end boss online, it's time to explore other avenues.

This. PLO is dying online as every other form of poker, thanks to black friday and other countries leaving the ecosystem and Stars greed to high extent.

I was the one guy that loved Pokerstars, i could never imagine not playing there. I haven't played in months now, why? Because there is almost no amateur players there , there is no hu tables , only zoom hu, I play live now, and in almost every game there is at least one guy who is in the "fog" when it comes to plo. This is not the case for midstakes PLO online or HU. You almost never meet a fun player at the table anymore, and to me this means its dead basically.

If I left , i am imaginining a huge number of players did the same thing as me or are about to leave very soon, and we are talking about hardcore enthusiasts here, and it will get worse i am sure about it.

Re: PLO boom still to come according to JNandez

Couple changes that would be good for the games:

1 Change the min/max buyin for all games 5/10 and under from 40 - 100bb to 100 - 500bb
2 Add antes to zoom games

i have to ask you the same.
in case you missed it: deeper games ---> more edges ---> higher winrates achieveable ---> good for the game from the perspective of professional players

Re: PLO boom still to come according to JNandez

i guess a lot of it depends on the definition of "boom"

i for one think it's not happening. americans still think internet poker is illegal and stars is raking low stakes to death. also robots.

at a certain point conditions get so battered that poker has found a niche just above bowling/backgammon/billiards and comfortably below anything the general public cares about.

if anything the "boom" will be the live poker public preferring it to NL above 5/10.

yeah i'm with clayton here

thoughts of a boom in the current system are just farfetched. every market is fragmented. the governments are ****ing lol and taking money from direct opponents of online poker. its gg

The only way a boom happens is if someone comes in and offers online poker to anyone in the world with an internet connection, and they can circumvent any attempts by governments to stop them. Basically we need to have gangsters running online gambling, not corporations.

kinda agree on this, though the difference between gangsters and corporations is questionable (corporate gangsters might be more fitting in this context).

Surprised to hear u say this when you try/claim to promote the game but refuse to touch on strategy.

Pretty sure this is what we had. It didn't work. Unfortunately, I don't think the other way will either. Barriers to entry for legalised online gambling in many countries are too high or too costly, special interests take precedence way too often, and any number of other issues keep creeping up such as payment processor fraud, increasing transaction costs, botting. Poker has had its boom. I still believe you can make money playing, but to try and reach the heights of the game is almost an impossibility.

It worked great for 10 years. If a new crop of giant world-wide rogue sites were to pop up, it would have a limited shelf life. But if the guys at the top do their jobs right, we could get a 5-10 year window where billions are just bouncing around the online poker ecosystem. The site owners have effective contingency plans the thwart government's first 25 lines of attack. Eventually attack number 37 actually puts some of the big dogs in front of judges they can't buy.

Then the process starts over with new guys building a new crop of world-wide rogue sites.

I'm not contending that the past 10 years weren't amazing. I just don't think we can replicate that even if the online poker sites returned to what they were doing during that period. Too many things have changed that can't be reversed. Other than the usual factors that have been discussed to death on this forum, we still have any number of other issues such as reputational damage, the legality issues which the average person is much more aware of today, and the intrinsic fear that's associated with depositing funds on these sites because of them, the restriction on advertising and promotion using the traditional channels, the higher payment processing costs in non-legislated regions and any number of other factors.

Lastly, whilst the government might be willing to allow one or two unregulated sites to continue, I don't think they'd be willing to act with the same non-chalance if industry behemoths such as stars, and others like it, were to reenter. But hey, take this for what it's worth from someone who doesn't live in the greatest country on earth.

Re: PLO boom still to come according to JNandez

PLO Boom is not a big boom anymore even Galfond said it was getting figured out in 2012... Still a better choice over texas holdem though to find fish. Booms happen when there is more fish playing. Once a game is figured out and to much research available it seems the games can't really boom anymore. People find the next game not figured out. I think where we could see a big boom is if Johnny Chan texas holdem gets popular. Basically whoever wins the pot gets the button. That could create a lot of action just to fight over that positional value.

Re: PLO boom still to come according to JNandez

I can only speak for my market, (Florida) but PLO is booming. I think there are two major reasons that combine to make it so big now. There has been a influx of ABC young nitty pros in FL that make the NLH games completely unfun for the regs that want to get a bit of their gambling fix. The regs are pretty sure the pro nits are colluding (and they might be) and given the nature of NLH, the gambler style regs just dont win as often as they used to before the nits started swarming.

But PLO - here the gambler types can kill the nits. They have unreal streaks winning with the kind of crap hands they like to play in NLH. The nits generally suck at PLO. There are not really that many pros that are good at PLO and many of those also have gambling problems and like to create monster pots when all they are doing is increasing variance -and the gambler types love that style. Thats what they used to like about NLH.

Problem is, the market needs to have enough people in it that dont care about losing a few K a week to even keep a 5-5 game going long time. So PLO will never last as a main game in areas where people just are not wealthy, not matter how degen they are. But add degen and money and its gods gift to poker pros. While big cities are best, I've run into amazing games in the sticks where you would never know they old men with no teeth in overalls are all millionaires.
