Hi all,

How do you generally play AKxx(x) on A-high flops as the pfr multiway? I feel like this is a situation that might differ substantially from hold 'em where top/top is usually the best hand.

Here's a hand I played at 1-2 5-card O-high:

One limp, hero BTN raises AK449ss $15, two callers. Flop ($40): A-3-8r (no bdfd). Hero bets $15, limper c/r $60, hero folds.

This is a pretty dry board, so I bet on the smaller side thinking larger would not get called by worse and if raised I can get away from it cheaply. But I wonder if top/top is even worth a bet for value here three ways given 2p and set combos are always possible?

Thanks,
DT

It's fine.
You shouldn't give free equity and you have a huge range advantage here as they should fear AAxx(x) so you shouldn't be raised often.

I tend to think this is the NL way of thinking and not nearly as applicable to PLO(5). Perhaps someone better can throw in some input. I don't think the sizing's bad or anything, just the logic behind it is what I don't agree with.

I think your reasons for a bet and the size are good. TPTK, reduced but good outs, relatively safe flop, multiway. In big omaha, I would check it.

I'm not a 5-card PLO expert, but preflop seems loose here, no?

As-played, bet/folding on the smaller side seems reasonable.

Edit: this isn't a spot where we are so unambiguously "value betting", btw. With our A(K), we block a lot of continues, so betting to deny equity is actually more of our goal than you may be appreciating. We can also win at showdown reasonably often if we hit another A or a two-pair out (although maybe I'm losing nuance with my 4-card PLO thinking vs this 5-card PLO scenario), so we don't mind making the pot a little bigger (especially with position).

Betting small like this on flop doesn't accomplish much. I think occassionally it's OK to mix in a check (moreso if HU), but majority of the time this is still a 55-65% PSB+ situation in PLO (pre-river), even on dry boards, cuz we're more in the business of denying equity w/ marginal made hands in position 2-3 way. I much rather make something like 8754 or QJT3 (both 35% winners ~) fold their equity when I'm on a TPTK/OP type hand. Equities run too closely in this game to let people backdoor you for cheap.

I'm not sure I'd bet into two callers on A83r with AK44 in PLO, giving us a 9 and the other two an extra card doesn't seem like a positive trade. If I did bet I wouldn't bet small "because we're ahead".

villains having to be scared we have AA seems very unlikely given we raised AK944. I haven't played PLO5 but I'd assume pre. is only a limp if the blinds aren't going to raise much, and I'd never raise it.
