Smile Check Raising to Less Than Pot

Sometimes we check raise when our opponent bets. The question is, what size should we check raise to? Full pot? Or something less than full pot?

Are there certain situations when check raising to less than full pot is preferable to full pot?

Interested in your thoughts.

Re: Check Raising to Less Than Pot

i asked phil galfold about this on RIO after he started using a light XR strat.

He basically said that lighter XR's are easier to balance (like 1/2 PSB XR), and we are able to allocate more hands into these xr ranges. Monker will use plenty of light XR's FWIW (if the option is entered into the sim)

this discussion reminds me of a point that cory mikesell made, he said after using monker so much, he discovered that there are many spots/areas of the game tree in PLO where we could use a variety of sizings and they all produce similar EV HOWEVER the mistake people make is in the ranges that accompany those sizings. Whatever type of sizing strategy you chose you have to make sure that you are adjusting your ranges accordingly.

Yes.

There are many reasons to xr less than pot including:

Hero wants to be called.
Hero wants to xr a wider range and/or be less polarized.
Controlling the size of the pot for the next bet is more important than value extraction or immediate fold equity.

I think an easy way to approach it generally speaking is to go smaller on boards that are more locked down. The actual solution is more complicated than that, but I think this method is easier to play, at least as a starting point.

Full pot would be preferable when we are attempting to deny equity. Because this is such a large part of PLO, many players default to this approach. I can't think of a reason to not do this but I am eager to listen to any other thoughts.
