Hand 1 - turns out SB had pocket 8s and HJ had a 9 with a few overs. I was more scared of a CRAI from a 9-7 than a 9-8, because I would be popped on the turn itself. But you are correct that there was definite value to betting. Unlikely 9-8/9-7 would not bet ahead of me.
Hand 2 - I did exactly that, bet ~$50. Everyone folded. Having a set of Aces on that board, I didn't want straight/flush draws to get equity but was wondering if I should have checked behind and seen the turn.
It's all good if they fold on Hand #2 - you can't give free cards with your equity and position, half the deck makes a straight.
Sometimes winning a small pot is the best case scenario.
