Meh..not sure he many options but to run him over.
1. He's got wide slide with a hand tag. That option is gone unless he takes an awkard move inside. This is not a natural thing to try and he'll lose speed with the change in direction.
2.Any direct head-first slide would have had each arm on the side of Varitek's leg and and dangerous move for Snyder's head or neck.Varitek's leg was located in perfect spot to disuade a head-first slide.
3. The standard slide we had drilled into since little league would again have seen Synder in a bad spot. To make that play he would have jambed his right knee or shin while trying to make contact with the plate with his left leg. As we saw, Synder simply got stopped cold.
4. Run him over.. best option
I was thinking about this and I don't want to give the impression that I never played the game and that it is easy to pick the best option when not dealing with this in real time.
I'm pretty sure (positive actually, because I have dealt with this before) that I would pick the run him over option as soon as I saw the position that Varitek took.
When the catcher has his foot planted up the line from the plate and it is braced, and the outside line is also blocked, there is only one instinctive option. Boom.
