The start of another disappointing season, i've never been so excited tho as i live right downtown this year! Should be fun.

2-0 imo!

Hey guys,

Very cool thread, espec. the OP. I grew up in Waterloo and live in Miami now. Any idea how I can catch Jays games for free on the interwebz?

I hope Purcey can win ~14, from the way he has been pitching in the Spring, it is def possible.

Although JP is due to trade one of our prospects for a borderline 3rd starter once Romero/Richmond eventually struggle....lol

I didn't catch any of the game last night, but 2-0 is certainly a very nice start to the season. It'll all be for naught unless they can win at least one more of the next two against Detroit!

Re: Toronto Blue Jays: 2009 season thread!

BJ located his pitches very well, the one that Inge bombed to centrefield was a little up, maybe 8 inches above the knees, but was right on the outside corner if not a little outside. The Tigers broadcast radar had him throwing his fastball between 87-89 which is a bit of improvement from the spring where he was 84-86.

I don't understand the hate for Ryan, he was lights out his 1st year in Toronto, and then suffered an injury and had tommy john surgery which usually takes 2 years to recover from. (In most cases the pitcher's control takes 2 years to come back and they struggle the 1st year they return because the tendon in the elbow is still pretty loose) What is really weird is that usually a pitcher gains 1-2mph after tommy john surgery because they replace the elbow tendon with a stronger one in the leg, so seeing a drop in velocity is puzzling, but hopefully Ryan can recover and once again be one of the game's best closers.

Re: Toronto Blue Jays: 2009 season thread!

Uninspiring loss to the Tigers yesterday puts the Jays at 2-1 on the season. I didn't catch any of the game, but it looked like the Rogers Centre was absolutely dead. Attendance of only 12,145, down from 16,790 on Tuesday and 48,027 on opening day. Welcome back to another season of Blue Jays baseball!

Currently 2-1 for the Tigers in 5th inning of the get-away game. Romero has let up 7 hits so far but only two runs. It's not televised here so has anyone had a chance to see if he's at least looked good?

I think the last thing JP is going to do is trade for starting pitching.

Cecil, Mills and Janssen are going to be ready in under a month, and there are 5 capable starters on the team now. Not sure why you assume Romero is going to start struggling. I was at the game today and he was great. Obviously, he's not going to be an all star but I think he's a capable major league starter.

McGowan/Marcum will be ready late this year, or certainly early next year.

That's 10 starters.

As for relievers, you have Accardo and Wolfe in Triple A, both of whom would be on most major league teams.

If anything, you're going to see JP trade AWAY pitching... but certainly not in the near future.

You do realize that he hasn't put up good numbers past high A-ball right? He's gonna hit a wall eventually. And if the Jays are in the playoff hunt come August and Marcum/McGowan/Jannssen aren't ready to start for us (with the former 2 most likely out for the year), then JP will probably rent a starter.

Obv with our stacked division it's not likely we are in the playoff hunt, but my original post was based on us making a run. IF this is the case he's not gonna throw Mills/Cecil into the fire. I think we have the talent, and Cito >>>> Gibby by a mile.

Re: Toronto Blue Jays: 2009 season thread!

Theirs a 1% chance of JP trading for any starter, and other's stated we have a tons of starters. He will go through growing pains with them this year for next year.

Hopefully today's game doesn't get canceled due to crappy weather in Ohio.

All this logical talk about what JP will or won't do is probably misplaced. As far as I can tell, he usually makes the worst possible decision.

I just really hate the skydome when it is closed and think it is a solid stadium with the roof open. People still go to baseball games outside all over the northeast.

Ya I think the Rays will regress, but also improve. It will appear like they are keeping the status quo or slightly declining, but they are improving.

OK, so, who exactly are we going to trade for a starting pitcher? (Rhetorical question because it's just not going to happen)

Re: Toronto Blue Jays: 2009 season thread!

Yes romero was a fringe A player until mid last season. He would have been cut if he wasn't a 6th overall pick. But he somehow magically got his stuff together mid last season and got promoted to AAA. He's been alot better since, lets give him a month before you write him off.

also game will be back at 920

Yes, for those who have stuck around to watch it (both on TV and at the field).

Couple of great breaks for the Blue Jays in the top of the 8th. Millar falling on his way to 1st and yet he still made it there due to the 1B not picking up the throw from 2B. Excellent bunt by Bautista and then the little flair that dropped in from Scutaro. Breaks like that never seem to go the Jays way. Rios clutches up and knocks in a couple more, four on the game now for him.

Hopefully Downs + Ryan can shut this one down and build the bridge to Doc!
