2-3-4-5 hitters go 1/19 with 1 BB and yet the Jays score 8 runs and win. Gotta love the Kelly Johnson/Brett Lawrie 1-2 punch.

Of all the marquee free agents this offseason, doesn't Darvish in many ways make the most sense for Toronto?

And before someone corrects me, I realize Darvish isn't a typical UFA in the truest sense of the term.

why? pitching depth seems like a strength imo

Pitching depth throughout the system is definitely a strength, but I don't think our starting rotation past Romero is absent of some big question marks. Drabek's fall from grace has to be a massive concern heading towards next season. I don't think anyone was really expecting Cecil to win 15 games again this season but his blips were also kinda troubling - are the ceilings adjusted accordingly for these guys?

The one guy who plays tricks with my perception is Morrow, because it's felt like to me that his ugly starts have been, um, "uglier" for lack of a better term, but I realize he's seen his WHIP and BB/9 improve this season. He strikes me as a Jekyll n' Hyde type of starter - it's either beautiful or ugly, no real in between.

Basically, is this a rotation that's good enough to challenge for a playoff spot next season as it stands? Is it possible that Romero is the only true elite talent in this rotation?

I just feel like the opportunity to add a 25-year old ace to this staff fits AA's MO perfectly: young elite talent, contributes immediately and down the road as well, and he represents an opportunity to transition this rotation from good to flat-out nasty.

Plus, and this is probably the best reason I can think of for aggressively pursuing Darvish, if we don't get him, it's very probable he still ends up in our division, and that's just disgusting.

Also, should we be expecting Henderson Alvarez to challenge for a spot in the rotation next season? Really good signs so far but lol sample size/lol Orioles ldo.

From Buster Olney's blog today:

Brett Lawrie is drawing raves. Says Jim Palmer in this Bob Elliott piece: "He reminds me of Jeff Bagwell." Lawrie powered the Jays on Thursday.

From Elias: Lawrie's 17 extra-base hits are tied for the most through a player's first career 26 games since 1940.

He's just the third player 21 or younger since 1940 to have 17 extra-base hits through his first 26 career games (Jeff Francoeur and Albert Pujols are the others).

It appears that d'Arnaud will end up being the "prize" of the Halladay trade and not Drabek.

Meh, all three still have real hope. Gose is developing power and his glove is apparently sick already.
