Just found out (by his twitter) that Romero is dating Miss USA Rima Fakih.

Nice, that's nice.

She looks unhealthy anorexic, if she put on 10-20 lbs or more she would probably be very attractive tho

ya but then she'd have no abs.

(not that i think abs on a girl is really all that attractive).

You guys are so shortsighted. Don't you see the bigger picture? If he stays with Miss America, there's no way she lets him stay in a Canadian town for baseball. He's as good as gone when he hits free agency.

Rosenthal and Rojas are both reporting that the Jays and Bautista are close on 5 years/65 mil with a team option in year six.

I was hoping for a little less than that based on the Uggla deal, but the good side is that it suggests the Jays are optimistic about JBat keeping up at least some of what we saw last year. Ultimately, JBat was one of those elite-level talents AA is always going on about in 2010 and we took our opportunity to keep that in the fold. Think I'm content with it.

I think 5 years is an awfully long time for a 30 year old who has had 1 good (great) year. I'll happily eat crow if he crushes another 40+ HRs next year though.

the thing is, if he averages 35 HR and a 360 OBP for the next two years, that's like 40 mil in value right there and the I like his chances of earning 25/3 in the last three years. Obviously there's a risk that he doesn't put up those numbers the next two years, but there's also a chance he exceeds them and gives us great value on the deal.

This article at Fangraphs does a much better job of illustrating what I was trying to in the last post:

fwiw, They had JBat as a 6.9 WAR player in 2010, so their projections seems pretty reasonable.

Somebody please explain to me how this is any different than when the Jays signed Wells to that albatross of a deal after his career-best 2006 season.

1) big difference in dollars
2) two fewer years
3) Bautista was way better in 2010 than Wells ever was
4) The Jays now are on the brink of making a run. Paying a premium for wins 90-95 makes a lot more sense than paying for wins 80-85.

5) 7/126 back then is like 7/165 now.

also, this isn't official yet, and we don't know the details.

I think the Jays benefit because the distribution of Bautista's performance going forward is asymmetrical. I think it is a lot more likely he is worth $100 million than $30 over the life of the contract, but when he is worth $100 it becomes much more likely he leaves in FA. As a team who isn't that attractive to other high end FAs we need to take good gambles when we can.
