I think that was his last chance. Charlie let him pitch to Hanley with 2 outs and a runner on third *probably* to give him confidence going forward (that would have been a huge out for him), and a chance to prove that he should be the closer in the playoffs. Nope, he walks him, then bang bang its over. GG Lidge.

I think Lidge just had his last chance (4 chances more than any other closer, I think). If last year never happened, he'd be in the minors long ago.

What can it do about the HBPs? Personally, I don't see a big problems, as long as Chase is good at moving his head, his elbows, and his knees out of the way so he doesn't get injured.
Philadelphia Phillies: Ruin Tomorrow Jr. Quote

Why would you think that Chase Utley is being targeted? HBPs are not a normal distribution amongst MLBers indicating that Utley is a large outlier and thus is being hit on purpose. HBPs are a skill (Biggio, Quentin, Kendall).

LOL yeah, can't believe a Phillies fan is complaning about Utley's hbp's. Anyone who watches him knows that 1. he crowds the plate like no other and 2. when a ball is coming at him he doesn't turn away but turns into it. If I was a fan of another team I would not like him. He routinely sticks his shoulder out trying to get hit by a off speed pitch

Also, Lidge needs to GTFO! I love Cholie's comments.

Quote:
He was our closer last year and we signed him to be our closer now,” Manuel said. “He’s struggling. But at the same time, it’s hard for us to close the game out. It’s tough. It’s kind of what we’ve got. I’ve got confidence in him. I keep sending him back out there and hopefully he does the job. That’s about all I can say. I pull for him every time he goes out there, believe me. I guarantee you that.”
Manual is the same village idiot last year who EVERYONE in Philly wanted to run out of town. That is, untill the Phillies ran like god and won the WS. Now, everyone is all over Cholie’s saggy balls and I’m not sure why. I mean the guy can’t even formulate a simple sentence.

Also, it’s very reassuring when Cholie says that he is HOPING Lidge does the job. If that doesn’t instill confidence I don’t know what will.

Utley doesn't jump out of the way like others.

I can't think of a reason he would be targeted significantly more than anyone else - he's not a loudmouth or anything.

Yeah, lol. Like Phillies fans are really hoping that Lidge blows a save and makes them lose a game.

"Oh, you have faith in him! Well, never mind. Obviously he is the right choice."

Is that the response he expects from the fans?

When the Phillies won the WS last season the media was quick to praise Manual as "the player's coach." "He just knows how to put his players in a position to win." Complete BS obviously, but Manual bought into it too. He thinks he's being a great leader by sticking with his guy even though his guy has a 7.48 ERA, a 57 ERA+, and a 1.86 WHIP. Amaro needs to step in and do something fast, because this it getting out of hand. If I was the coach I wouldn't even include Lidge on the playoff roster.

I wasn't complaining about Utley being hit, I meant I wonder if the MLB will do something to stop HIM.

Utley doesn't try to get out of the way, and technically that's illegal.

Yea its illegal but it is really never enforced, Utley may be one of those guys that owners/umps etc like and respect so they look the other way a bit. Just a thought...

Please Brad pull yourself, fall on the sword and admit that your knee is till bothering you (whether it is or not but I think it is) and stop hurting your team.

BTW have any of you read this Jayson Werth story, now this is a guy who gets it.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/column...rry&id=4492591

I particularly like at the bottom how he says the fans may have gotten soft this season, and for them to support them like they did last year. Yes Jayson, they are called bandwagon jumpers, they go to games and dont pay attention to anything that is going on.

Not that you talked about this, but Werth is absurdly underrated for most people who don't watch Phillies' games or know about their players. He is an elite corner outfielder who can play center field more than competently.

I can't remember who said it, but earlier this year after a Werth homerun the opposing broadcaster said something along the lines of "On most MLB teams he is their star, in Philadelphia he is a role player." Never thought about him that way until that moment.

My roommate is a big Giants fan, he gets really pissed off when Werth and Ibanez hit because they bat 5th and 6th, and they're better hitters than everyone except Pablo on SF.

I don't know that it's bandwagon fans as much as a little bit of the fire is gone.

Does everyone want to win the World Series? Of course! Do we want it as bad as we did last year? Ehhh...

There's just no way to re-create the passion and desire of a 25 year drought.

Allright, everybody knows Lidge is no good. What do any of you suggest Manuel should do? Madson has blown 6. Romero/Myers are both coming back from injury (hopefully). Do you want to use Happ or Pedro?

Personally whoever losses out on the postseason rotation akmost has to be the closer, which is hardly a good option.
Philadelphia Phillies: Ruin Tomorrow Jr. Quote

Hardly a good option, but it's better than Lidge, hands down. I don't care if he just randomly chooses who pitches the 9th, as long as it's not Lidge.

But yea, most likely Madson or Myers.

Pedro has pitched his way into the rotation IMO.

But yea, Madson or Myers...unfortunately.

Utley is awesome. He kind of turns his head a little I guess to try and pretend that he's trying to get out of the way, but if I were a pitcher I'd get pretty annoyed at him always leaning in.

A couple weeks ago he even blatantly went out of the baseline into the infield going first to second hoping to get beaned by the 1B trying to throw him out instead of going home.

I love that he'll get on base anyway he can, I just cringe every time he takes one close to the hands after what happened in 2007
