**** you guys for talking me into believing this team had a chance at October baseball

What a pathetic display two of the last three nights against the worst team in the sport.

If there was a game to start Ruf, this was it. Howard's line versus LHP on the season: .176/.225/.324. The pitcher tonight was basically a minor league pitcher who doesn't blow anyone away. There's almost no chance Ruf can't hit a lefty like that better than .176/.225/.324

Now that the wildcard push excitement has subsided a bit, I found a comment by "hk" (someone here?) on a Crashburn Alley article about how bad Ryan Howard is pretty interesting.

Quote:
When the Dodgers claimed Cliff Lee on waivers, I wonder if they would have given up de la Rosa, Webster, Sands, De Jesus and Loney for Howard and Lee. Is Lee and Howard a better return than Beckett, Gonzalez and Crawford?
Even if the Phils didn't get anything really in return, but could unload the awful Howard contract, shouldn't they have done it? It would free up a ton of money for the Phils to go out and get a guy like Josh Hamilton, who given a weak market for him and concerns about personal issues can probably be had for the next 4 years cheaper than what Howard is making.

It is hilarious that teams are walking guys to pitch to Howard in high leverage situations now. Cardinals did it a couple times in the NLDS last year and Astros did it this weekend.

I don't wanna give up Lee just to dump Howard. Lee is an ace and those guys get paid. Howard's contract is aids but he should be better next year. It takes almost 2 years for achilles tears to heal.

Gonna be annoyed when they finish 2 games out of WC when they dropped 3/4 to Astros minor leaguers

Yeh, I was just thinking about that. Hopefully this thing works out that we are playing the Nationals' minor leaguers the last 3 games of the season.

lol @ anyone who wanted to trade Cliff Lee this season to free up salary.

Next year's rotation would have been Cole, Broken Roy, Ace Kendrick, Vance and his bone chipped arm, and ???

With Halladay's healthy so tenuous they can't afford to go thin at SP next season.

probably should just shut him down for his last couple starts. something clearly wrong with him health wise

Yeah someone has to tell Halladay to shut it down, as he obviously won't do it on his own. At this point there really isn't anything to play for, might as well give his arm the rest and get a look at some young arms. I'd like to know why nobody is saying anything to him when he's warming up pre-game, as he obviously isn't himself. Though Charlie would just say something along the lines of: he's our ace, you don't just waste him on the bench.

Halladay will be fine next year. He might not ever be the pitcher he was four years ago, but I can't imagine he wouldn't still be an above average starting pitcher.

Eh? I can imagine it because this year he wasn't an above average starting pitcher, and he'll be a year older.

I'm assuming there must be some type of lingering injury issue with Halladay. I don't think age and wear and tear have all of a sudden hit him.
