Looking at the UFA list, Dan Ellis and Chris Mason are the only two that stick out that I'd rather have over ML at this point. So, since Leighton is going to be so cheap, maybe we'll gambooool and give him a two year deal and hope it pays off.
you know if bouch keeps it up no way laviolete pulls him imo. Hes notorious for riding the hot hand, no?

also carter really hurts, gagne pisses me off so whatever.

I'm not saying he should pull him, Boucher has earned the right to be the starting goaltender. I'm saying in case of emergency, I'm more comfortable with Michael Leighton in net than Johan Backlund, just like I would have been more comfortable with someone else the way Boucher was playing before the trade deadline. Luckily for Holmgren, hindsight is 20/20 and everyone will praise him for getting lucky after making a huge mistake.

watching laperriere go down just made me sick, the guy gives everything he has on the ice and taking another shot to the face is just brutal, for someone who blocks shots the way he does, why doesn't he wear a mask? because he fights?

my heart sunk as soon as i saw him get hit too - the guy is fearless. hopefully its not going to be a serious injury, can be sewn up and back in time for the next round

He's tough as nails. Apparently he has a broken nose, but they said on Versus he gave an interview after the game so he's going to be ok. I'd expect nothing less of him to be out there next series with a full mask on to protect his nose. I that guy so much, if you look up "hockey player" in the dictionary, his picture should be there. He has all of the characteristics you want from a guy and I'm damn glad he's on our team.

Carcillo will be too busy scoring goals for that.

I know it's still early, but does anyone know when round 2 will start? Is it already set or do they wait for all of the other series to finish before determining when the games will be played?

It won't be officially determined until all of the first round series are over. If I had to guess, it'll be April 29th or 30th, or May 1st at the latest.

that's about what I figured, thanks. I'm loving it that we're the first team to make it to round 2!! Bring on the Crapitals!

Who could forget brian boucher dressing up as patrick roy for a series.

Im hoping those pesky canadiens can take the ovechkins to 7 games and tire them out a bit.

Or beat them.

In all seriousness though, who would you rather play, Caps or Pens?

i would rather play the caps. they are super talented, but the goal tending is a small crack in their armor imo.

that and crosby scares me unlike anyone ive seen since 99.

Varlamov has been really solid since he's come in, I don't see goaltending being an issue for them. Their problem is the only defenseman playing with any consistency on a night-to-night basis is John Carlson. Pittsburgh's D isn't great, but it's much better than Washington's and they make up for it with a lot of defensive-minded forwards, which Washington doesn't have many of either (aside from Belanger). Washington just has an offensive powerhouse that's going to score goals.

That being said, I'd rather play Washington. I think we match up much better with them given the way Pronger, Carle, Timonen and Coburn are playing. Timonen and Coburn should be matched up with the Ovechkin line, and given their speed can give them a lot of fits like they did in 2008. As long as Giroux and Richards keep playing at this level, we're going to score goals, especially against a less than optimal Washington defensive unit. What's going to make the difference is going to be whether guys like van Reimsdyk, Asham, Powe, Briere, Hartnell, etc. can step up and light the lamp. Briere had a good series against New Jersey, but he's going to have to play like the first line centerman that he did in 2008 and get contributions from Hartnell, Leino or JVR for us to succeed. I think the Washington series will go seven games, but either team is good enough to win it.

yea i agree with your analysis. the knock on varlamov has been that you can beat him on his glove side and at least in this series hes been flashing the leather pretty good and preventing them from climbing the ladder on him too much.
