that and crosby scares me unlike anyone ive seen since 99.
Varlamov has been really solid since he's come in, I don't see goaltending being an issue for them. Their problem is the only defenseman playing with any consistency on a night-to-night basis is John Carlson. Pittsburgh's D isn't great, but it's much better than Washington's and they make up for it with a lot of defensive-minded forwards, which Washington doesn't have many of either (aside from Belanger). Washington just has an offensive powerhouse that's going to score goals.
That being said, I'd rather play Washington. I think we match up much better with them given the way Pronger, Carle, Timonen and Coburn are playing. Timonen and Coburn should be matched up with the Ovechkin line, and given their speed can give them a lot of fits like they did in 2008. As long as Giroux and Richards keep playing at this level, we're going to score goals, especially against a less than optimal Washington defensive unit. What's going to make the difference is going to be whether guys like van Reimsdyk, Asham, Powe, Briere, Hartnell, etc. can step up and light the lamp. Briere had a good series against New Jersey, but he's going to have to play like the first line centerman that he did in 2008 and get contributions from Hartnell, Leino or JVR for us to succeed. I think the Washington series will go seven games, but either team is good enough to win it.
