If we seriously make a run here with Foles at what point do they seriously consider trading Wentz? Super Bowl appearance? Thrilling loss in a shootout in New Orleans? It's far-fetched obviously but I really think if Foles done did it again you gotta roll with him. We've also never seen an MVP level QB on a rookie contract even sniff the trade market so would be interesting to see how much they would get for him.

This will be discussed a lot tomorrow in Philly

So let's speculate about stars aligning to discuss trading a younger qb with more talent. Because sports radio will make it a thing. I wonder how the players on the team would feel. You saw Foles early this season, right? I can't even...

The stars aligned earlier this year! I already said that it would be far-fetched... but Bill Simmons and Cousin Sal pretty much led with it on the Guess the Lines Pod and I really do think it is interesting

Probably get a nice haul for Wentz. He's damaged goods. I say trade him.

thankfully people like you are not in charge.

Foles is not very good. he got hot for 2 games last season. those games luckily happened to be the NFC CG and the SB.

outside of 1 good season a half decade ago, Foles is pretty pedestrian.

It's almost like all of those accomplishments are based around:

2 post season games where he got hot

1 season from a half decade ago

Hey guys Flacco won a playoff game in his first six seasons or something and was also SB MVP.

They should trade Wentz for him straight up.

I'm not saying Foles is better than Wentz. I'm asking if Foles were to win the Super Bowl again what do they do? I think it's a legitimately tough spot and decision

You trade Foles because his value will literally never be higher.

see, pretty easy...

So easy eh? That's why they did it after last year when Wentz was coming off an MVP level year?

Oh and Foles contract was better then too

just because their were no buyers doesn't mean it's a hard decision to make.

actually, they don't trade Foles, because his option for next season is 20M. so he walks free after this year pretty much no matter what.

They were offered the Browns 2nd round pick (#35 overall).

I'm willing to bet on this if you'd like. Let's call it 'the Eagles need to make it to the Super Bowl with Nick Foles starting.' They let him walk you win, otherwise I win. Even odds. How much?

I'd bet they don't pick up his option how it's currently written.

Birds are like 11M over the cap next year already, Foles contract frees up 18M, next biggest contract that could free up money is Agholor at 9M. Foles 20M option would make him the highest paid player on the team. Seems unlikely that they are willing to pay a backup the most money on the team, multiple SB wins or not

Yes, I said "no offers" but are you really this dense? I'm sorry I didn't spell everything out.... there were no offers they thought were worth trading Foles for.

Almost like Wentz was also coming off a serious knee injury that occurred late in the year and said injury can take up to a year to fully recover from.

Or something.

Wait- so a top of the 2nd round pick isn't good enough for a backup qb who they're going to let walk anyway?

But according to jonny we're just gonna let Foles walk after this year for nothing even though Wentz missed the end of the season once again.

Uggg, I'm done. You're either trolling or too stupid to understand.

are people saying to let Foles walk without any compensation whatsoever instead of trading him and getting something in return? if they trade him are they still on the hook for some portion of his contract?

Um, you're the one that's saying out of one side of his mouth that Foles is a backup qb who they are going to let walk for nothing and out the other side is saying that the 35th overall pick is not enough for him. Can't be both

it's more complicated than "just let him walk or keep him to trade him".
- he has a 20M option next season, so the Birds either have to take the option or not take the option.
- Foles also has a buy out from it, so if he chooses to be a FA, he is a FA by paying ~2M
- they need to find a team to trade him to willing to take a 20M/1 year contract unless Foles is willing to negotiate a longer/cheaper year to year contract to either keep him or trade him

this has been muddled though - the original discussion was what do they do if Foles wins another SB, and the answer is simple: Wentz is the starting QB in 2019 and they do what they can to try and get value from Foles or keep him for cheaper than 20M.

if they trade him, the bonus money and already paid portions of his yearly salary still count against their cap. it would be a min of close to 2M. it could be more, depending on when they trade him and how much he was paid between the beginning of the nfl league year and when they trade him. whether they would still be on the hook for part of the money not paid depends on the trade they negotiate (if the nfl even does this, i'm honestly forget, i know it's common in baseball to pay portions of contracts after trading players)

ffs, it is actually both.

They would let him walk after this season because: see above

He was worth more than a high 2nd round pick last year because: the Birds obviously felt having a very good backup was worth more than a high 2nd round pick because of the uncertainty of when Wentz would be back from a major knee injury. I'm not a doctor, but when people say Wentz could still play this season compared to last year at this time when people weren't even sure he would be ready for camp - i'd say those situations are markedly different
