Philadelphia Eagles: When You Wentz Upon a Star Philadelphia Eagles: When You Wentz Upon a Star

If the front office believes Wentz is unlikely to finish most seasons, they don't give him that contract. I don't think Wentz getting hurt in the playoffs the year after drastically changed their assessment.

I can see them thinking they had to do it if they believe Hurts is really a stud in the making, if they were truly going best player and thought he was a first round talent. I don't know anything about Hurts, but it has to be more than "Wentz can't stay healthy."

That might be the logic, and I think it sucks. 2nd round draft picks are so much more valuable than cap space.

Also, guys like winston are available every year, and the market for them is lukewarm at best.

i think they're trying to mimic the Pats, in a way. draft backup, he plays some - hopefully well, trade away for assets. this was a deep QB class, in the next 4 years, there will almost definitely be a very sparse QB class and Hurts might be worth more than he was drafted for by then. couple this with probably using him how NO uses Taysom Hill, except Hurts can actually throw the ball.

don't get me wrong, i'm not thrilled with the move, but it serves a clear purpose.

this whole draft was weird for the eagles. in 3 years Howie and Doug are going to either look like geniuses who dunked on the entire league or a couple of guys who drafted a terrible class.

1: "reached" for tiny fast WR
2: qb to backup your franchise qb
3: undersized olb who might need to move to safety
4: undersized safety
4: OG
5: a 6'2" wr...... who weighs 189 lbs
6: 3rd fastest ILB, who is undersized
6: 3rd fasted WR
6: an OT who probably needs to move to G
7: a DE who projects best as a 34OLB

If the Eagles drafted good players all of this hand-wringing will be forgotten. The only question with Hurts is the same as it is with all of the other picks: will he turn out to be a good NFL player? Because if he does you’ll have zero issue getting great value out of that pick at #53.

I’ll never understand why the majority of NFL fans recognize that QB1 is by far the most important position on their team and that entire seasons can be derailed when one goes down with injury, but then look at QB2 like he’s the 40th most valuable or something. I can understand the logic of not taking one top ten (and much more so back before the rookie cap), but a mid-2nd round? And it doesn’t have much anything to do with Wentz’s contract.

Feel how you want but seeing a division rival take their QB depth seriously always makes me a little nervous. They know about their roster holes and weaknesses and have the QB1 locked up, but saw one they liked enough to take over all those more immediate needs? Clearly they graded the guy out pretty high. At that pick, how good a QB prospect is too good to pass on?

Kind of along the lines of what Gonso is saying, this LOLPFF article with the clickbait title made some sense of it for me. I don't know about all their probability estimates, but the general concept seems sound. Cliffs are you shouldn't look at QB as a binary have/don't have situation and want to maximize your odds of having an elite QB. They estimate having both QBs significantly increases the odds of having a top 6 QB. Elite QB play yields 1-3 wins above average where other positions are like 0.2-0.7. The 50th percentile of non-QBs at pick 53 is slightly below average starter and the 70th percentile is a slightly above average starter. Eagles obviously think Hurts has elite potential, so from an EV standpoint it makes sense. FWIW PFF had Hurts as #2 (Burrow #1) in their college-to-pro QB projections.

Those 30% odds of second round picks becoming slightly above average or better also makes me think I shouldn't get too worked up about individual picks unless past the first round, but get concerned if they're always whiffing.

This team doesn't have the talent to make a deep run this year. Honestly just focus on securing the #1 pick. Why go 6-10 or 7-9 and get a middle of the road pick. The Eagles can either have the most sought after QB over the last two decades or another franchise will leverage their future and the Eagles can completely rebuild the line with what they get in return for the pick.

LOL this thread was full of doubt when Hurts was picked. He's a gadget QB, waste of a pick, etc.... A few of us were right. Week 14 starter... Jalen Hurts.

Curious to see who they have in mind to replace Doug.

Apparently they thought that Frank Reich won them the Super Bowl and had Wentz playing like an MVP and wanted to go back to him, so they brought in his OC Nick Sirianni. Which also makes it seem like they are going to roll with Wentz as the starter next season. I can barely contain my excitement.

This offseason is going to be one for the ages. In a draft that looks loaded I'm sure Howie will find a way to **** it up. Quite honestly this team has so many needs I'm not even sure where I would go with pick 6. Mock drafts are all over the place. Some mocks have the Eagles taking Chase, another has them taking Pitts and another Smith. Which doesn't surprise me because if I was the GM I'd take Patrick Surtain II.
