Preview from Scout here.

Some musings from NDnation here.

and here.

And finally, a less than auspicious Irish season forecast from The Onion.

This season could be anything from a BCS appearance (the talent is definitely there) to, should Nevada pull off the upset tomorrow, something long and painful. Any resemblance to '07 or '08, now that talent is there and presumably mature, will result in a summary firing of the Fat One. Hoping it doesn't come to that but I'm being safe and preparing for it anyway.

Let's Go Irish!!!

Fingers guardedly crossed, I want to believe that this team has a lot of talent, but then I remember the Navy, Syracuse, and USC games. SDSU was a pretty decent barometer of the season last year, if we struggle against another WAC team to start the year, it could be a long season.

Do they fire Charlie Weiss when he comes to the BIG HOUSE and gets owned by 2 true freshman QBs?

I'm stoked! This team definitely has the talent to win this year. Not NC talent but with their team returning most everyone from last year and a couple of highly rated recruits if they don't win at LEAST nine games with this schedule Ol' tummy tuck Weis should and will be fired. All that being said i think they could struggle tomorrow against Nevada. Imo, Kaepernick, Taua and Lippincott are the real deal and should put points on the board. Nevada's defense is terrible but ND has not been exactly a juggernaut on offense in years.

All in all if this team doesn't win it will be coaching, imo and as much as I loved Charlie early on, he must go. With the weapons they have on offense, the offensive genius should be able to score some points this year. peace and Go Irish!

I don't think of it as trolling. Am I unfair? Yes. Do I throw out some chum? Of course. But I think I have something to say on occasion, and I think I have a place in an ND thread.

Anyway. I think the Nevada game (and each of the first three) is huge. I don't think Nevada is a pushover even though ND ought to be better at every position.

The Irish don't need to dominate, but they need to win. If they are lackluster in victory it will hurt Weiss, but not kill him.

I'm surprised that the center of mass on the win-shares is so high. Easy schedule or not, I think some injuries could break their dicks.

I really like your posts shemp. I think they are often well presented and rational.

Like everyone else, I have no idea what to expect this year.

Predicting 6-6 last year wasn't as great as it seemed. I couldn't see that we do that after a 4-1 start. Nor how we left Stanford in 2007 longing for San Diego St. I am not sure if we left Hawaii eager for Nevada.

So this year is a fog. We are good or we aren't. Weis is brilliant, Weis is not.

Pessmists: Notre Dame has just not played tough on the line, and teams like BC and Stanford push us around. The qb is named Clausen with the usual shortcomings. The defensive front 7 are new and teams can bludgeon them into submission with runs up the middle. ND can't run and Weis will call the wrong plays. The haters agree.

Optomists: ND is emerging out of a major black hole of talent in 2007-8 having no one one year and young players the next. Now they are back with experience. The WR corps is as good as 2005 and the running backs are better. The D line is young but talented, and the problem of a slow secondary seems to have vanished. Many opponents are having off years and even USC is starting a brand new quarterback. This year the emregence of Jimmy Clausen and a favorable schedule launches Notre Dame into the BCS and perhaps a title game.

Schedule: Is littered with BCS teams that are supposed to be good but not this year. Specifically hopes are down for Michigan, Purdue, Washington, Washington St, Stanford, and BC. All oft hem have two things in common: you've actually heard of them, and they are rebuilding this year.

Take your pick. The only thing constant is that pre-season predictions of Notre Dame have been proven to be wrong the vast majority of the time. 2004 being only the correct one in recent memory.

Weis: is not the new coach anymore. He's led ND to 2 BCS bowls and 2 of the worst seasons. It's time for him to produce some wins. As in

9 - 3 plus a Jan 1 bowl win over a jaded Florida.

Go Irish
This was posted in the '08 thread (perhaps the poster missed this new one), and was a nice forecast so I'm copying it over here.

I'm sure to be in the minority here, but I would much rather the team go 7 - 5 where four of those five losses are nailbiters that hang in the balance late into the 4th quarter; than go 9 - 3 where the three losses are blowout defeats against the 3 best teams on the schedule.

Progress for me is the team showing real grit and pride week in, week out and genuinely competing up and down the schedule. That way, we can be happy that the team is better on the basis of improved performances. Rather than facing a reality that it has a better record due to a kind schedule.

This schedule sucks, going 7-5 is unacceptable, as is going 9-3 while getting blown out.

I almost entirely agree. For me, during TW's last year the worst possible outcome would have been him winning another 1-2 games and having the Irish spin their wheels for another few years under his direction. I bascially want us to be awesome and get to the BCS, or awful so we can get a new coach who can better utililize the best talent ND has had on campus in years. I'm hoping for the former, but the latter is preferable over team that uninspiringly slogs along and grinds out 8 wins.

I'm just upset that ND will be good and Weis will be popular again. Weis is a person who doesn't deserve to receive any accolades IMO. It's always sad when ND is good, but it will be especially sad with this douche at the helm.
