I think it would have been much smarter for him to take the percentage / standard playcalling route in that scenario. Not necessarily because it carried the higher EV (I mean, when considering our running ), but because it definitely would leave him less open to criticism after the fact in the event of a loss. And minimizing that would be significantly preferable over the coming weeks.
But you are completely correct when you say he would be hailed as a genius in many quarters that will be gunning for him now. When you are massively results orientated / black and white in your perception, anything that wins is a 'good' decision and anything which losses 'bad'.
