I'm sure that the Charlie Weis of 2005 would have promised to leave money on the table if he were asked what he would do after going 3-9, 7-6, and 6-6. The AD has said that money won't be the obstacle, and they are near the point where I believe him.

But, and this is the good news, if he beats a snake-bit UConn and then Stanford comes out flat after the SC stomp followed by the Big Game--- maybe, just maybe, more Charlie.
Shemp,

I honestly have tried to extrapolate the best numbers from comparable programs that have publicly reported coaches salaries. The most of the top head coaches make between $3-4 million a year. Pete Carroll having the highest reported salary of about $4.4 million.

Assistant coaching staffs total salaries are higher than you think. A lot of universities have very high total payrolls for assistant coaches. Approx 40-50% of Div I programs have total payrolls for assistants $1.5 million/year or higher. Tennessee has the highest reported assistant coach payroll with $3.3 million/year. I assume 1-2 years of salary for buyout for the coaching staff.

Here is the link:
USA Today 2009 Coaches Contracts

Note: ND was one of nine schools to not actually fully or partially disclose current football coaches salary. Guys, please feel free to review the numbers and let me know what you think.

Other than Tenuta, I would be rather surprised if any of the assistants had multi-year contracts. This number can be safely reduced.

Thanks for actually providing data as opposed to my gum flapping. While many coaches earn more than $3M, only two coaches (of those reported) have a salary in excess of $2M. As for assistants, I'm going to cling to the belief however likely mistaken that no non-coordinator has a multi-year deal.

It isn't known what his salary is, what his total compensation is, and what parts of his total compensation are guaranteed. I'm guessing it reduces entirely or mostly to salary, and that the 1.5M-2M range would have been a very generous/top-shelf 10 year extension in 2005.

I thought it likely was, but didn't know. Went with the possibility. My apologies.

I have seen that sort of scenario tossed around on ND nation, and I do think you'd fit in there.

I know that sounds mildly insulting but it isn't intended as such. I think a lot of those guys are no doubt smart, charming, excellent in every way imaginable, etc., but when they get together talking about ND football, their shared passions and the echo chamber of it all have a multiplier effect that produces some silly views.

Well I thank you for that exemplary display of humility, I owe you a gold star.

On NDnation we speculate and guess and hypothesize just like on 4. Say, when we post "what about Tony Dungy?" we're debating if he would be a good coach for the school without actuallly asking if he would take the job.

I also read that "Slow Pony" is laying 10,000,000/1 right now and is skyrocketing by the second.

Just wanted to point out I was pretty surprised that UM had the same odds as BK. If I were a ND fan I would be very excited about that. A legit chance at Meyer is huge.

Dude, it's a teeny tiny market with I'm guessing a 50 dollar max, I wouldn't put that much stock into the efficiency of that market.

It would be more interesting to know what they would give you against UM as the next coach. 3/2 for is taking candy from infants.

Good point. I just thought BK was sooooo much more likely than UM. I agree that this market is not likely to be efficient but it beats my uninformed intuition.

my favorite part of that list is speculating how Chip Kelly got there.

KELLY TO ND says reliable source on condition of anonyminity.

Paul Johnson signed a 1 year extension today!? Is that a 'no thanks ND' signal?

Looking back on ND's coaching picks, only one has panned out since 1982 (Holtz).

And they have picked some big losers, including a high school coach. So if they did pick a solid coach it would be against the grain.

ND fans will probably look back at Weis and wonder "how in the hell did we think that guy would be good?"

It looked great in 2005.

Today I notice we are throwing a lot of timing routes. The clock is ticking...

ND fans everywhere just cringed. That missed Fg may have just kept alive any chance Charlie has to remain HC.

I just got home and caught the last minute of regulation. Talk about UConn stealing defeat from the jaws of victory.
