But even at their best ND can only be pseudo-relevant like Oklahoma. If they played in the same division as Ohio State or Bama, they would never even attain that fake level. We need a system where big time programs like Oklahoma, ND, Michigan, Penn State, Texas, USC, Oregon, can be more than pseudo-relevant but actually have a legit shot.
Watch this segment where Joel Klatt rolls out his playoff idea.... I love it. Hits on exactly what you are saying above.

It's really not. People tend to forget that Notre Dame knocked off Clemson who was #1 at the time. I don't want to hear the no Trevor Lawrence argument. The gap between DJ and Trevor at the college level will be miniscule. DJ is already the Heisman favorite for next season.

I'm a realist... Notre Dame fan? Yes.. but I'm also honest... Alabama was far and away the best team in the country this year. The bottom line is that if ND was beat by Bama the way Ohio State was then all of the critics would be chirping. Instead they are bailing OSU out by saying Ryan Day didn't have a good defensive game plan.

Agreed. Complete joke. Would have been fine with Oklahoma jumping ND but not A&M. To your point ND crushed UNC in UNC when they had their full squad.

Under the BCS we'd settle it by playing A&M in a NYD bowl. As is someone had to be #4. And if they listen to the playoff expansion hawks, some hapless #8 team would get embarrassed too.

Are you going to share with the class?

(expanding the CFB playoff to 8 teams - - - > better recruiting at Michigan)

Yeah it's a simple idea. More teams make the playoffs = more teams relevant = easier to recruit for those now relevant teams = talent pool dilutes away from being concentrated in 3-4 teams. There's a reason why Nick Saban is against expanding the playoffs. He's not stupid. He wants his monopoly of talent.

The BCS was a two team playoff. Doubling it in size did not diversify the 1st tier, it concentrated it into the same three teams over and over again.

The number of relevant teams was not doubled in size tho. Paradoxically more teams were relevant in the BCS system. That's why we know the playoffs need to be expanded. The current format is destroying the sport.

And thats the key to making Michigan, ND, Penn St, Texas, etc truly relevant again. Expanding the playoffs to 8-16 teams isn't gonna work overnight tho. But 5-10 years after, the talent dilution will be evident. That's the theory at least.

"Son I know you said I really want to go to Bama and play for a national title but I have big news. They are going expand the playoff! If you commit to Michigan you will likely start for our 8th ranked team, that has to play against Bama"

That's how it would be in year 1. Expanding the playoffs and making more teams relevant would dilute the the talent pool over time and make college football more balanced and competitive. This is why Nick Saban is against it. He likes his concentration of power.

Am completely speculating, but a few days ago he “disappeared” and was later “found.”

He was randomly shot a few months ago at a gas station while putting air into his tires. He seemed to pull through, but if I’m guessing signs seem to point to depression and something self-inflicted.

Game reminded me of Texas 2016 only somehow coming away with a win.

Jack Coan scrambling makes Tommy Rees look like Michael Vick.

That roll out sideways pass to Mayer's back shoulder with no blockers makes Tommy Rees seem like

Jim Colleto?

Brian Kelly tied with Rockne on wins, a milestone I guess many thought he’d never reach.

Will he ever win a National Title? I’d say the last few years are establishing a consistent base of competitiveness that make it possible. 46 - 8 since the start of the 2017 season. He’s got a lot wrong over the years, but he’s got a lot right too.
