PS lol thakid

Cf defense is more valuable so Gardners value decreases by having him in L
I'm saying they need a corner outfielder because they already have two guys that play real good CF... And on the market a corner outfielder that can hit is cheaper than an equal hitting cf .... (they're gonna put whoever in corner anyway)

Crawford is free agent and likeely yankee???
I only follow yanks, but I think I've atleast heard that rumor...

RF is probably > LF by the slimmest of margins since you need them to have a better arm.

there's probably some tiny difference between 2b, 3b and cf too but it doesn't really matter.

Yeah true. If I had to guess, CF might be more important than 2B/3B by a decent enough of a margin that it matters, but I really have no idea.

Given the same hitting skills, how many WAR does an elite defensive catcher bring over an average one?

I think being a catcher adds like 5 RAR to your WAR, whereas being a 1B subtracts like 12 RAR from your WAR. However, if you have a positive UZR at 1B then that helps, whereas there is no UZR for catchers. I'm not positive about this though.

Pretty sure the numbers are dynamic depending on what is determined as replacement level though. 5 and 12 were just what they were last year.

evaluating catcher defense is a big problem for the sabr guys.

Base runners won't try to steal bases as often against an elite defensive catcher. How much does RAR take that into account?

Doesn't account for it at all. Though I believe a good catcher isn't as preventative of base stealing as intuition would lead you to think.

again catcher defense is quite difficult to quantify.

but if you're really interested in it i would start by reading this:

click the first image box thingy and read the article.

If your catcher throws really well you'd like the other team to try to steal a lot.

Why do they use passed balls per batter? Wouldn't passed balls per pitch be more accurate?

That was kind of my point. There's gonna be a cap to the value of throwing out base stealers.

Oh, right. All else being equal, the elite throwers (once they have that reputation) are probably less valuable than guys who throw merely well because nobody runs on them. There's probably a sweet spot where the catcher throws well enough that most guys are making a mistake by running, but not so well that only elite base stealers try to run.

I was checking out the Phillies thread earlier. They still have a hard on about Lee making that catch on the mound in the WS. Being on my 8th beer, I was tempted to troll but decided not to.

God the regular season can't come fast enough.

Is the guy on the left even a real person? He looks like something that came out of Steinbrenner's genetic engineering lab.
